Has anyone bought a custom boot liner for their car, the type that covers all areas and secures with Velcro and can be customised to include seat backs, flaps for seat dropping, bumper protection etc. There are several advertised on the web but I wonder how durable they actually are compared to just fitting a tarp in there. Prices vary quite a bit so am open to suggestions for the manufacturer. Car is an XC 60 and used for biking and caravanning so a lot of stuff goes in there.
We have got a hatchbag in our Merc Estate. Not cheap but does fit it perfectly.
They sell for quite a lot 2nd hand so obviously well respected

£5 tarp from b+q
I tried to cut a custom liner from a sheet of tarp, had visions of sewing nice hems but ended up stapling it. Didn't take long and does the job!
I have a Honda CR-V with a Honda manufactured boot liner.
Does Volvo offer one? I would suggest that route.
Mine works very well, catches dirt and stones that get in there from the bike etc.. It's moulded from a hard but flexible plastic and I regularly drag it out of the car and wash it down.
I've never bought an aftermarket liner.
Hatchbag. I bought one back in 2008 for my Ford C-Max. I had them custom make it to my spec as the ones on their website only showed two versions: rear seats up, or rear seats folded, whereas on my car I'd completely removed all three seats.
Since that car I've used it in the second C-Max, Skoda Octavia, a Peugeot estate & am currently using it in my current Astra estate. OK, it's not an exact fit but it's not far off, & with 15 years use & abuse, (throwing a muddy mtb in, tip runs etc etc) it's wearing well with no rips or tears. I specified it with the extra bumper protection flap, protects the paintwork on the rear bumper. Cost? IIRC it was around £110 at the time.
Money well spent IMHO.
EDIT: Sometimes Hatchbag advertise for people who have cars that they don't currently list a product for to contact them & they'll use your car as a pattern to manufacture a boot liner for. They then supply you one FOC.
We had a Hatchbag for our 52 reg Honda Stream and it was great, kids, dogs, tip runs, mess. It's possible they may have changed in the last 20 years though.
We bought a second hand Volvo xc60 and the dealer threw in a Volvo spec fabric boot liner (as the car came with a cream carpet in the boot wtf?) to sweeten the deal.
Initially I thought it seemed a bit flimsy and glad I didn't buy it, but 2 years heavy use, its been pretty much faultless - holds the muck from the dirty pram, muddy dog & even protected the boot with the petrol tank for the outboard leaked a bit.
Only slight fault was the elastic holding one of the corner clips snapped but that was user error as I tried to slide something too heavy into the boot and dragged the liner with it.
Would recommend although I dare say a non-volvox branded one would probably be just as good.
i looked at custom liners and a plain tarp.
this was a good compromise in terms of fit and cost - from online and from Swinley Bike Hub:
https://www.changeinbag.co.uk/shop/p/vehicle-boot-liner
on my Leon estate i hook it over the front seat headrests and is plenty long enough
We bought a Rhino UK https://rhinoukbootlinersltd.co.uk/skoda---extendable-two-part-boot-liner-5451-p.asp one for our Superb Estate.
Goes up the back of the rear seats, 60/40 split, covers sides of boot as well. I've found it excellent, 2yrs now and operates as per day 1, although the base looks a little grubby now (dog and bikes related).
One thing I would change, I would have got the floor of the cover padded to add a bit of luxury for the dog. And, not sure if they can be bought this way, but any connection between the seatback cover and the boot cover is not needed. When you drop the rear seats, it can pull and bugger up the nice fitting of the cover throughout the whole boot space. Tempted to take a pair of scissors to it to make them completely separate. Actually, why the hell have I not done that already?
The stick on velcro is not needed at all for the superb as the sides, floor and seat backs are all 'tough' fabric which the velcro of the cover sticks to like a match made in heaven.
I have an SMAX with the rhino liner with the floor padded.
All works really well and seems tough. Must have had it a year now.
The sticky adhesive for the veclro has failed, but that is probably my fault. If bothered then make it nice and hot.
I would buy again in an instant.
I used to have a cheap tarp, kinda did the job - however I treated myself to a hatchbag for my Astra. The difference was incredible. It fitted perfectly & when I came to sell it it had kept the inside mint so I had to do very little to spruce up the car - would recommend & if we didn't now have a van would definitely buy again as they are bombproof.
Had a Hatchbag in my beemer since 2009. Does a good job. I've had to replace a couple of the velrco pads that stick to the car, but otherwise its saved a huge amount of wear and tear. Money well spent IME.
