I see there are up to 40t available for rear cassette what do I need to be able to run this, currently with XT 11/36 rear cassette, X9 short cage type 2?

Up to 42 in fact if you put a Oneup ring on the cassette. I don't know how these setups will work with your short cage though, I think the SRAM short is a bit longer than the Shimano short now?

I think you'd need at least a medium if not long cage mech for 42 tooth sprocket.

using a Zee short cage with a 40T with good results, not tried the SRAM short.
