Heading up to Innerleithen this Friday for the weekend. What are the current conditions like? I’ve only rode there once before and was it was extremely dry but I recall that there appeared to be a variety of track conditions so unsure what front tyre to put on.

I generally use shorty in the wet / mud and assegai in the dry (both maxxgrip). I do have a magic Mary (ultra soft) as well which is probably a better jack of all trades but do prefer one of the maxxis tyres if conditions suit.

Any local information would be much appreciated!

It will suit either Maxxis fine, it was pretty good on Sunday and will only get drier as the week goes on. I'd pick the Assegai probably but you’ll enjoy regardless

What trails are you planning to ride?

Assegai front, works well on all the rocks and in the loose. Don't think I've ever run a shorty there, want something that is more friendly on the roots

Perfect thank you, assegai it is then.
We’re quite keen to tick off the trails we never did on the last visit + a few favourites from last year. Looking at…
Fri: ny ny, 3G into wardel way, hangover, big baw, feed the pony
Sat: lone wolf, right side clyde, 2nd base, flat white then as many others as our legs will take!
Sun: Thornilee

Unless you can recommend any others?!

I'd be heading to Yair if I had time, although I haven't ridden Thornilee.

As far as tyres go, I've been there in August, first time on a decidedly second hand MM, second time on a new Assegai and the latter was the better tyre. I'm a firm believer in the all rounder that is the Mary but was amazed by the Assegai.

Thanks all some good tips and ill add these trails to the list.
I did look at yair but we decided on thornilee this time. Will definitely check it out next time.
I was a Mary fan and still am tbh, but just find the assegai better for rocks / dry conditions. The Mary does shed mud better than the assegai but then in my opinion, when it’s muddy / loose, the shorty is a better choice. But you won’t go wrong with any of these tyres and like you said Mary is the best one tyre suits all.

Its drying out nicely ATM.
Assegai is always good on Golfie no matter what the weather is doing.

Just be aware the main climb may still be closed on friday but everything should be back to normal from saturday onwards.

If you're going to the top of Pony you may want to try No Content instead of Pony.
I'd also do Wolf of Wall Street instead of the other two wolf trails.

I might be over there myself on Friday.

Thanks Stu, do you mean the main fire road from the bottom next to golf club? Or something else? Why has it been shut?

I’ll be on a orangey red orbea rallon if you see me!

Yep closed from bottom of Nae Spleens to the top of the Paydirt climb.
There's a detour but it's a bastard even an an ebike.
Closed for larch clearance.

Taken from TVTA.

Larch Felling Update
The forwarder work has been going well and should be finished within the next week. FLS hope this will complete on or even before Friday 21 April.
Once the forwarder work is complete, FLS will check the trail/road/timber stack heights and should be able to reopen both the Pay Dirt Climb and Forest Road for all users.
Once the forest road is reopened, Timber Lorries will continue to operate weekdays; loading and extracting the felled timber. Other forest users will be required to stop and wait to be waved through before passing any timber lorries that are loading. There will be signage put in place to this effect. Please cooperate with the contractors , not only are you putting yourself at risk passing a loading timber lorry, you will be delaying their operations thus extending their period of activity but also creating justification for closing the forest road for both this and future harvesting operations.

I'm hoping it'll be open again as I've been riding else where mid week while the climb has been closed.

I'll be on either a Geometron or a Kenevo. Depending on how my recovery from a cold type bug I had goes.

Thornie is fantastic btw. And also, will suit a less spiky tyre. TBH all the tyres you mentioned will do a good job but the Assegai probably works well in the most conditions, except when it goes claggy and sticky as it sometimes does- especially on the slower trails where it's harder to get the tyre clear. It's what I'd put on, if it were me. Well no actually I'd just use whatever was already on 🙂

claggy and sticky

You must be mistaken. It never turns to peanut butter over the Golfie.
😉

TBH apart from the clean up operation after I prefer it in the wet over there.

Just to echo SSS, I took my son there for the first time last week and it's pretty dry.

All the tracks off the lower fireroad (Flat White, Community Service and so on) were dry and grippy. We only did two off the top: NYNY was grippy, Pre-dinner drinks was somehow really, really slippery.

I was on Argotal/Butcher and he was on Assegai/DHR. All were great.

He can't wait to go back 🙂

Sorry for the thread hijack but is the climb still closed and if so is the diversion obvious? Hopefully heading there tomorrow and not ridden there before, may leave it for another time if it's tricky to navigate the diversion, cheers

I'm fast becoming an argotal fanboi 🙂 It's not just that it's good in loose stuff, it's also bloody good on the hard. Might be my new bestest tyre evar

Any local knowledge on how things are running any closures or things affected with the recent high winds/storms? TVTA website mentions closures around big baw...

Hoping to head up tomorrow to avoid the bad weather in the lakes!

Cheers

Not been over since last week but everything was fine then.
The second half of Big Baw has and will be closed for quite some time.
All the details are on TVTA

If golfie yesterday is anything to go by, it'll be quite damp and saturated. Maybe a bit dryer due to the steepness of the trails there but imagine it'll be very greasy.

I'd personally give the trails up there a break given conditions  there's plenty of harder wearing trais near by

I was at Thornilee on Friday,

Trails seemed pretty well worn in and riding well despite the wet. We went there rather than GT off-piste, thinking that would be too sloppy.
