Our renewal for bike insurance just came through… about £750 😮

So don’t want to be paying that. Any recommendations for decent prices?

Want them insured in the garage and away from home including Europe.

They’re above the limit of our home insurance but happy to change home insurance too.

Ta.

I pay less than that per year for house and bike cover with pedalcover.

I think we're with Pedal over for house, contents and bikes. STW discount available I believe.

@oldfart I was just looking at M&S. They don’t appear to cover theft from a vehicle?

?????That'll be your car insurance I would have thought?

Personally, I have found Self Insurance the simplest, most cost effective policy with unsurpassed levels of customer service.

I recognise it doesn’t suit everyone’s circumstances, but perhaps some are thoughtlessly paying third parties to insure something they can afford to replace themselves?

You're absolutely right that self insurance won't suit everyone's circumstances. When I had 8 grands worth of bikes taken in less than 30 seconds I was glad to be thoughtlessly paying a third party to replace the bikes and the garage door.

I doubt it.

We’ve always been covered by specific bike insurance or home contents insurance for bikes away from home locked in a vehicle.

I’m not sure I could afford to replace all our bikes any time soon.

Just done a Pedal Cover quote cheers, indeed cheaper than just bike cover and (need to double check) include everything we need 🙂

Pedalcover was only £100 a year more than a like for like house insurance policy for me, so it was extremely cheap for the cover.

My wife just insured my new bike (bike insured for 10k) with CyclePlan (underwritten by Aviva) for £190 which includes home, away from home, Europe and worldwide.

£0 excess but does need to be secured to an immovable object if you are away from your bike with secure lock - they detail the locks that are suitable

immovable object

Do they define what one of those is?

After 15 years it's full circle and I'm back with M&S. Not the cheapest, but most optimum to cover my tarty bikes, with decent house and contents cover as a byproduct.

So I'm about ready to go with PedalCover except for one of their exclusions... "

" ✘ wheels or Cycle Accessories are stolen, unless the whole Pedal Cycle is stolen in the same

incident"

I've emailed them to ask but it reads like if I have someone break in and steal 6 sets of wheels but leave the frames locked to the wall I don't get any pay out?

Do they define what one of those is?

Yes they do:

"Immovable Object

a) An object which cannot be undone or removed unless using extreme

force (i.e. requiring the use of power tools or other machinery, not

simple hand tools such as a spanner), or

b) An object from which a Pedal Cycle cannot be lifted, either over or

under, without having broken the Approved Lock, or

c) A properly fixed motor vehicle Pedal Cycle rack which is locked to the

vehicle which cannot be undone or removed unless using extreme

force (i.e. requiring the use of power tools or other machinery, not

simple hand tools such as a box cutter), or

d) A Pedal Cycle rack supplied expressly for the purpose of securing

Pedal Cycles which cannot be undone or removed unless using

extreme force (i.e. requiring the use of power tools or other machinery,

not simple hand tools such as a spanner), including those found at rail

stations, city centres and places of work"

Interesting thread.
I’ve been with M&S for years as they’ve beaten home, contents, and bike insurance competition every time but I am always looking for ‘better’. With a new, ‘wildly’ expensive, bike on the horizon this has been a helpful thread. Thanks OP.

As long as you don’t carry the bike in a vehicle I think? Or have I got that wrong?

@phil5556 let's face it insurance companies are the modern equivalent of highwaymen so all as bad as one another. Take home insurance, I've recently heard a story where someone's home was damaged in a recent storm. When they went to claim there insurance company said they weren't covered because their cover only starts with winds above 56 mph and the damage was caused by a 55 mph gust !

So I checked the small print on our policy, sure enough covered only for Windsor above 55 mph ! How the hell is anybody supposed to prove or disprove that is beyond me ?????

Don't know if that answers your particular question but I'm of the opinion insurance is ok until you want to claim, I hope I don't ever have to put that to the test .

We went with M and S for our bikes . I still think their policy of insuring any bike up to the maximum stated is open to fraud but I'm sure they have systems in place to robustly cover that . Years ago when I insured our bikes you had to specify each individual one including frame numbers I'm surprised that's no longer the case . Luckily I still have receipts and photos of all of ours .

I would urge anyone who thinks that getting their bike stolen out of their car would be (completely) covered on their car insurance, to read very, very, very carefully the full policy wording.

@Rich_s so how does anybody prove what the actual speed was of the wind that blew caused the damage days after the event?

This is quite handy for me, it’s on a house the next street over.

Otherwise I’d be asking my local airport for their records & contacting the MET office. Not sure what else I’d do.

BUT anyway that’s nothing to do with my wheels or garage door!

I have email confirmation that my garage does meet their criteria and the bikes don’t need locking up (although they are). Policy taken out 🙂
