I've just swapped over a pair of forks from a basic model to a better pair.

On swapping them over I notice that the forks that came with the bike have the crown race welded on to the steerer so I can't swap it over to the new forks and don;t have the crown race that came with the headset as it came with the bike

Do I need a new headset or can I just buy a new crown race from a LBS?

Firstly is it def welded not just really stuck? to answer the question really crown races are headset brand specific, but it will work with another brand. If the frame and forks are nice bit of kit go get yourself a new headsey if it's just a hack bike a new crown will suffice

Defo welded - its on a pair of bog standard BMX forks and not sure what brand the headset is.

If I do get a "generic" crown race - will I damage the headtube or forks? Don;t mind if the headset gets knackered as I can replace that over time.

it shouldn't be loose with a slightly odd crown race so i can't see you ovalising your head tube or anything bad like that. take it to your lbs and let them have a look - tell them you'd rather not buy a new headset
