hi,

I have a set of Crossmax SLs (2008). When I free wheel after a certain speed there is a high pitch grinding on the rear wheel. I have taken off the Cassette and replaced the free hub etc. However the grinding is still present. Any ideas why this may be?

Thank you

Did you replace the white teflon washer... this is what wears away and causes the freehub to wobble.

Sounds like it could be a worn bushing surface on the hub. This bush is not replaceable, but I think you can now get a freehub with an undersize bore to compensate for the worn bushing.

The infamous Crossmax death howl

It's wear in the white nylon bushing in the freehub, you'll be able to tell as the cassette will wobble from side to side. Thing is if you just replace the freehub or the bushing (someone sells them on eBay) then it'll soon be back as the rubber seal underneath it needs replacing at the same time, as if you re-use the old one it'll let the dirt/grit in pretty quickly.

You need to lube the freehub contact parts lightly with a light lube like Finish Line wetlube (green one). Make sure not to loose the little washer when you reassemble.

My mate had a similar problem as he reassembled with grease rather than lube.

Worth doing this fairly regularly as it'll increase the life of your wheels.
(I've just had to down grade from crossmax sls after a few years of hard use on a 2007 pair).

Ok, basics first - whats it lubed with?

oil only on a Mavic freehub, never grease.

Then watch and do this:

If it's still making a noise, come back to us
