When I built up my Crockett earlier this year I used a set of new Fulcrum racing 7 DB wheels. These have been great and I haven't had any issues even ran tubeless but I have put a couple of quite bad dents in the rear rim (user error 😬)

I contacted Fulcrum and they apparently don't sell replacement rims for the 7's.

So what rims does the Singletrack collective recommend for cross/gravel/off-road abuse?

Need to be:
- Disc
- Tubeless
- At least 19mm internal width
- 24 hole
- Black

DT Swiss R470db? Quite happy with the wheels I've built with them.

The DT Swiss R470db look decent and not too expensive, we might have a winner except I forgot to add that the rear is asymmetrical (sorry 😣).

As a winter (dark nights) project, I am also tempted to dismantle my old 26" wheels and reuse the Hope Pro II hubs to build up a more heavy duty set of wheels, those DT Swiss R470db rims could be ideal for them 🤔

Would need to convert the rear hub from qr to 12mm but you can still buy kits for them. Which is amazing when you consider that the hubs are over 12 years old.

Assymetric rim can replace non assymetric and vice versa.

Tempting on the wheels offer but I think I'll stick with the set I have and just replace the rim/s.

Cheers.

Slightly OT, I would think twice about converting non-evo ProII hubs to 12mm. The axle is too thin and prone to snapping. 15mm OD axle with 12mm ID hole. It's why they switched to a 17mm axle.

Me too but more light duty.

Sorry for thread hijack but it's so closely related I thought this the best place for it - I've got 23mm internal gravel rims (H+Son Hydra) and I'm thinking about building up another pair of wheels since I've got the hubs. To switch easily between road tyres and knobblies, both 40mm ish.

However, I'm not likely to be denting them with my use.

What would be good rims for that? I'm quite happy to spend a bit more for a weight saving to be honest.

I heard that with the Pro II's but I thought as they'd be used on a cross bike then they'd be ok. Maybe I need to have a think about this again.

I have been using DT R460DB for a while and they seem tough enough. Even rode 6 miles on a punctured tyre (4 of it gravel) a month ago as couldn't be bothered to walk and they held up to it.

I'd be tempted to go for the DT R500, they tick all the boxes above and at 22 mm wide internally they'd be a bit better for Gravel use whilst still legal for CX racing.

I have been running the gr-531 for the last few months and its pretty much the best upgrade I made to my gravel bike. Not super cheap but they are wide so teh ride comfort and increased loads and the grip! but like most people I can't say enough good things about dt Swiss rims got the ex511s on my big bike.

FWIW. I've got non-Evo Pro2s converted to 12mm on my gravel bike, admittedly for my road wheels. I think that they're better since they changed the profile (corners are less sharp and don't act as concentration points for stress). However for a bit more money, you can fit the Evo axle as long as you swap to the Evo bearings and freehub spacers.

That’s weird as I’ve had the same for ages on my big travel bike and now my burly hard tail and I’ve only ever replaced the bearings once and nothing else has even given a hint oof wear or damage.

I went with DT Swiss R500 as a good mix of cheap / light / strong.
They've been brilliant so far, really nice wheels. And tubeless on them was very easy, the tyres popped up first time with just a track pump.

+1 for the DT Swiss R470db I've had no issues with mine.
