Looking for a bike that will fit my needs - commuting / winter / touring / long rides etc.

Needs to be comfy, fast/racy looking, drop bar, lightish (hence alternatives to the CDF as on paper it seems very heavy), disc brakes, must be able to take a front and rear rack which seems to be the tricky thing as I don't want an out an out touring bike.

Cyclecrossers would be perfect however finding one that will take a front pannier rack without spending a fortune seems impossible!

Yeah seen these, they look perfect aparts from they wont take a front rack.

Sounds like a Surly Straggler to me. Lightness will be dependent on the build you choose (we do more custom builds than stock bikes with Surly).

My 2013 Croix de fer is 105 with mavic 719 mountainbike 29'er rims - weighs a bit at 26lbs but not thaaat heavy.

Why do people get fixated on one facet of a bike? Weight, groupset etc
Ride, geometry, fit, and details like braze ons and mudguard clearance are far more important.
I've got a CDF 10 and its a lovely bike. Nicely made, adaptable and good looking. I've ridden the 20. It's slightly different, but mostly the same. One extra gear, a different tubing badge and brakes that don't need adjusting. That's all.....
What I'm saying is stop poring over the spec sheet, go to a bike shop and ride some bikes! 🙂

GT Grade, not sure it will take a front rack though. had a look at one today, the TRP hydro's are nice. Unfortunately Giant don't apear to have imported any XXLs (60) ino the UK 🙁

My 2012 croix de fer was 22.5lbs with 105 level kit, hope/stans iron cross wheels, a titanium seatpost and light pedals, and the steel fork.

That is only 2lbs more than my genesis equilibrium with 105, mavic kyrsium equipe wheels, and a carbon fork.

Mine felt nicely light, but my mate had a retail croix and that was up at the 26 or 27lb range and did feel more like a tank compared.

My hope/stans wheels weighed 1610g so you could knock another 100g off by going for the kinesis crosslight wheels.

So build one up rather than accept the retail package.

And put salsa cowbells on it as well.

Cannondale CAADX will take a front rack; threaded mounts on inside of forks so you can't see them from photos. Best deals at Epic Cycles.

(Yes of course I'm recommending it because I have one and love it.)

I can't help thinking being concerned about a pound or two when you are putting full racks on it a bit crazy. Remember you could buy a bike which will take racks but unless its been designed to run them (not all of them are!) it could handle like crap with the extra load.

Ampthill it defo has rear rack mounts but not certain on front its got inner fork leg mudguard mounts so it may take a front but it may not

Pft. Weight.... schmeight.

The New Genesis TDF is awesome.
I would have one in a heartbeat if i didnt have my Disktrucker, which is also awesome (if a bit of a tank)

If you are not going to be racing it i woudlnt worry about a few g here or there. especially if you are going to load it up. Think of it as a truck not a sports car 🙂

Or just buy the X bike you want, and swap the fork out for one with rack mounts?

I do like the look if the TDf, however the main use for my bike would not be touring so trying to get one that will cope with the few tours a year I do but also be at home for commuting duties and also weekly jonts with my mates etc, which can sometimes get stupidly fast paced! 😕

After days of researching I keep coming back to the CDF, not as heavy and as the TDF and other touring bikes mentioned above and I reckon with the right tyres I should be able to keep up with my mates plus it should be nice and comfy on my work runs.

Budget wise i'd be looking at the CDF 10 though the 20 is tempting, but as mentioned above I think a lighter set of wheels and possibly tyres would be in order. Sound daft? should I be saving a bit more to get the 20? I'd be keen to hear of owners opinions?

It hasnt been mentioned but I like the surly straggler. Pinnacle also do something but in Al not steel and should be a little bit cheaper.

The AWOL above is nice, but they have lowered the spec from launch.

Cant think of any others.

Just bought this. Light as buggery after I've done a few upgrades. Seriously fast off road too as long as it isn't too rocky.

Keep coming back to the cdf, was in the shop on Saturday to see it in the flesh. It looks great and ticks all the boxes, just the weight of it is slightly off putting but given the fact it's steel it wasn't as heavy as I thought it was gonna be. I would stick on some lighter wheels for sure which would help I'd reckon.

Why get caught up in weight?
It's a touring bike, they roll well even when loaded up.
My Vaya weighs a tonne, but I love it.

The main reason with the weight is that the touring side of things will not be the main use of this bike. It will mostly be my day to day bike and for weekend runs with my mates (not slow). The decision would a lot easier I was looking for a specific tourer.

I'll just need to get my legs going faster! 😀
