when i lean on my handlebars (down on one side , up on the other) i get a creaking sound. i've changed the stem, and will try the handlebars later. but is it more likely to be the steer on the forks? they are a old pair of fox 32's, if they are creaking is it terminal?

Can you identify where the creak comes from if you move your ear closer to certain areas?

Copper grease on the bolts and clamping surfaces normally gets rid of any creaks, otherwise you will have to look further - headset, forks, front wheel

cool will try the copper slip. pretty sure the sound if from the stem area, as when i hold a free hand over the area the sound is slightly muffled.

you started off saying you've changed the stem, but not said whether that made any difference or not ?

it won't be:

bars
headset
forks/steerer

in theory, it's possible that part of the headset top stack could creak, i.e. the split/clamp ring spacer that sits inside the bearing, or even the aheadset spacers (assuming you've got them fitted) but I've never heard off this - only come across creaks from stems....

good luck 🙂

Did you get it sorted? I had a bit of a creak few months back, thought it was headset so tightened it all up but still there. Had the same where I could press on the bars and the creak would still creak. Turns out it was the grips, ODI Ruffians, the grip was rotating ever so slightly around the clamp and when I found out about it, I could recreate the sound every time. New grips and no problem since.
