Hello all.
In the last week I’ve noticed a loud clunky creaky noise from the front of my bike. Quite alarming.
It’s a 6 month old calibre sentry with Yari forks. It’s not there all the time but can be reproduced by heaving up and down on the bars. Can almost feel it in the grips. It’s definitely only happening when the forks are compressing and extending on biggish impacts. The bike hasn’t had a lot of use as I had surgery in January and then since lockdown I’ve mainly been on the hardtail.
I’ve tightened the stem bolts on the bars and steerer, checked the headset for play and preloaded the headset again to be sure. It definitely sounds like it’s coming from the head tube, but I’m wondering if it’s coming from the forks themselves.
Is this a thing that recent RockShox are known for? Do I need to return it for warranty? Anything I should do to the fork to check- drop the lowers and replenish oil etc?
Will I die if I keep riding it?
Cheers
Dry stem bolts can make some nasty sounding noises. Worth trying a spot of grease on each one before ripping the bike apart.
Thanks. That seems to have quietened it down a bit. Will try same on the axle too
Well I discovered what the problem was last night. Chuffing top headset bearing in 2 pieces!
Pulled the top part off and the ball bearings are all looking up at me...
now to source a replacement bearing...
