I'm sure this has been done before (didn't come up on search before I get flamed) but I couldn't help but laugh when this morning's post arrived.

The postie handed me a shoebox-sized package from CRC.
I chuckled and he looked gobsmacked when I informed him inside was a 35mm Allen Bolt!

Surely they pay by volume for postage as well as weight? Not to mention the box.
Well I'm grateful for the protection they gave my bolt but I reckon a jiffy bag would have been cheaper. Maybe not??

The clue is in the URL.

Surely they pay by volume for postage as well as weight?

Given the amount of business CRC give RM/PF, they probably have a flat rate.

Not to mention the box.

Cheaper than you think. Only need so many standard size bits of cardboard, which are cheaper and easier to move along the supply chain, your letterbox excluded, than a jiffy bag.

Aye, been done before... CRC are the royal mail's biggest customer in NI so their contract rate won't be off the shelf. As for the boxes, cardboard is dirt cheap, recycled, and recyclable, a lot of the cost goes on inventory, handling and printing which is all helped by standardising.

if only there were local shops, specialising in bicycles that could provide you with 1 35mm bolt without needing to have it sent all the way from NI? What a wonderful world that would be!

Meehaja, there are and I do shop locally when I can. This week isn't that kind of week for me. The local shop lost £2.35 worth of business for a Thompson seatpost bolt and retainer. Ouch!

I had a bit of a weird one. Ordered some new wider bars in black, they came in a skinny box just bigger than the bars. Fine. Decided they were good so ordered a set for the wife's bike in white. They came in a massive box. Is the white paint that much thicker?

i was impressed that it only took one day to arrive but was bitterly disappointed as i was expecting it to arrive in a coffin sized box... 😯

I had a chainring in a jiffy bag the other day. I nearly started a thread about it.

Mate of mine worked at Crc for a while, when you get logical packaging is usually when the machine has broken down and they're packaging by hand.

Made the mistake of getting my new gloves delivered to my house instead of work this week. Of course the box won't fit through the letterbox!
