I see Chainreaction have just blown the price out on 290 Rectors.... Now £1,900. I know they are in administration and there would be **** all warranty... but would it be madness to pay on Paypal and use their protection? If the goods never turn up then raise it to Paypal and get a refund? Unsure how that works with companies in administration? suspect this idea is pure madness, just wondering out load.

Given the recent reputation for Nukeproof frames cracking, I wouldn’t buy one without a warranty.

The Pro Alloy model?

If you'd pay that much for an un-used secondhand one then go for it.

You'll probably be able to wangle warranty on the suspension with receipt if needed, and you're taking a gamble on the frame.

Look into the PP protection though!

I guess that suddenly puts a few other retailers in a tricky situation if they hold physical NP stock. Most people will be hesitant to pay for a bike with zero warranty and pretty much zero chance of returning!... but that's an impressive price and some may take the punt.

Any Paypal experts here... gotta say I am a bit tempted (but should know better really). Would Paypal cover non-delivery of a bike? (reading their website it appears yes). yes, it's the 290 Reactor Alloy, just went from £2300  to £1,900, they are technically trading so a fair chance of the goods getting delivered.

Unfortunately I suspect there are going to be a lot of 'bargains' over the next year or so.

If you 'need' a new bike then go for it.  If it breaks and there's no warranty then buy a Starling frame and swap the parts over.

If you don't need a bike I'd wait.  Like a vulture 😉

then buy a Starling frame

Ooh, I've got a Starling frame to sell.

Can be fixed by a bloke with a welder if it breaks.

😀

290

Pro Alloy does look like the Sweet (and Safe) spot - thats a heck of a lot of bike for £1900. With an alloy frame I wouldnt really be too concerned, but then it depends on your propensity for breaking stuff.

Size large powertrain Megawatt in stock - I'd be tempted if they halved the price, however idiotic an idea it would be

It might be that I just got too conditioned to pre-pandemic online pricing but am I the only one who doesn't think a bike is a bargain until it's at least 70% off RRP?

Arse! I was contemplating one of those Marley Frames, but now you've got me looking at whole bikes.

This is an awful lot of bike for 800 quid!

PayPal protection is rubbish even on stuff they do cover.

You lose your credit card rights with the retailer as PayPal are the intermediary.

I rarely use PayPal now, credit card direct with retailer so you have your consumer protection.

Ooooh. Cyclescheme here I come (maybe!)

EDIT: Maybe not - "Cycle to Work voucher acceptance has been paused for scheduled site maintenance. This will return towards the end of 2023 as we finish upgrading our website."

If they have Scouts and Cub Scouts on sale I reckon they’d be the ones to get.

Are we expecting the 2022 mega frames to get reduced like the 2020 mega frames?

That's the benchmark for me now.

@brucewee  ohh the irony .

Believe me starlings crack alright and there solution for my new oversized seat tube was to cut a coke can down for a shim .

I can't see the Nukeproof brand disappearing, their vast range of popular, quality products should make them very tempting to bail out, they make too much good stuff to sink without a trace, I think warranties will be okay.

Whoa, never mind the protection

and wheeled hoverboards

Does this suggest there are genuine non wheeled hoverboards I can use paypal to buy at my own risk?

'twas ever thus, remember the original Ragleys? I got my Mmmbop from CRC for less than my local bike shop got them in from Hotlines.

Since we're on about Chiggle stuff, that was exactly the same fix my mate was told to do on his mk1 Blue Pig bitd! The eventual mk2 replacement had an ovalised head tube out of the box. Took me years to trust them again after those two but my Trig was ace tbf.

Since we’re on about Chiggle stuff, that was exactly the same fix my mate was told to do on his mk1 Blue Pig bitd!

Did they not end up selling a 31.7 seatpost or something, for exactly that one model where they were all reamed wrong?

"His handlebars had started slipping. Not badly, he said, just a little when you shoved hard on them. I warned him not to use his adjustable wrench on the tightening nuts. It was likely to damage the chrome and start small rust spots. He agreed to use my metric sockets and box-ends.

When he brought his motorcycle over I got my wrenches out but then noticed that no amount of tightening would stop the slippage, because the ends of the collars were pinched shut.

"You’re going to have to shim those out," I said.

"What’s shim?"

"It’s a thin, flat strip of metal. You just slip it around the handlebar under the collar there and it will open up the collar to where you can tighten it again. You use shims like that to make adjustments in all kinds of machines."

"Oh," he said. He was getting interested. "Good. Where do you buy them?"

"I’ve got some right here," I said gleefully, holding up a can of beer in my hand.

He didn’t understand for a moment. Then he said, "What, the can?"

"Sure," I said, "best shim stock in the world."

I thought this was pretty clever myself. Save him a trip to God knows where to get shim stock. Save him time. Save him money.

But to my surprise he didn’t see the cleverness of this at all. In fact he got noticeably haughty about the whole thing. Pretty soon he was dodging and filling with all kinds of excuses and, before I realized what his real attitude was, we had decided not to fix the handlebars after all.

As far as I know those handlebars are still loose. And I believe now that he was actually offended at the time. I had had the nerve to propose repair of his new eighteen-hundred dollar BMW, the pride of a half-century of German mechanical finesse, with a piece of old beer can!

Ach, du lieber!

Since then we have had very few conversations about motorcycle maintenance. None, now that I think of it.

You push it any further and suddenly you are angry, without knowing why.

I should say, to explain this, that beer-can aluminum is soft and sticky, as metals go. Perfect for the application. Aluminum doesn’t oxidize in wet weather...or, more precisely, it always has a thin layer of oxide that prevents any further oxidation. Also perfect.

In other words, any true German mechanic, with a half-century of mechanical finesse behind him, would have concluded that this particular solution to this particular technical problem was perfect.

For a while I thought what I should have done was sneak over to the workbench, cut a shim from the beer can, remove the printing and then come back and tell him we were in luck, it was the last one I had, specially imported from Germany. That would have done it. A special shim from the private stock of Baron Alfred Krupp, who had to sell it at a great sacrifice. Then he would have gone gaga over it."
