You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi all,
Apologies if this in the wrong section - couldn't find a maintenance section at all...
Bit of a noob when it come to the mechanics of bikes and whatnot, but I'm willing to give it a go.
It sounds like the B/B is on the way out (clicking/crunching noises when putting down some torque)- at the moment I've got a Shimano BB-ES25 Octalink jobbie. It's got cartridge bearings (so not sure if the unit is sealed) - can these be removed and replaced, or is it a throw away job and get a new one?
So - if that's the case, I'm in the process of upgrading the parts - the crank is a bit generic, so would be looking to upgrade to SLX etc... with the hollowtech/external bearing B/B - if I were to do this, would I have to replace the cassette and chain, or are they okay for the time being?
Sorry if these are stupid questions!
Cheers in advance,
Rich
Hi Rich,
If you don't want to spend a lot just buy a new BB. You should be able to pick one up for a tenner. Remove the old one first to make sure you buy the correct size. Non-drive side unscrews anti-clockwise, drive side clockwise. The tool will set you back a few £'s too.
There's loads of guides online, try parktool
If you know it is an ES25, you should have it in your hands to measure the axle width and can measure the shell size off the bike.
Look here for prices:

Are you feeling lucky?

Cheers chaps,
As luck would have it, I've got the spec and it states that it's a 68mm x 113mm - the bargain £4 one!
I'll grab that, and pick up some tools too.
Thanks for the help - much appreciated.
Rich
Rich,
Sorry to put a dampener on things, but the 68x113 E-Type will need a 2.5mm spacer on the drive side unless you actually have an e-type front mech or BB chain device. If you do not fit one, the chainline will be 2.5mm smaller and the chainrings could touch the frame. I hope you are still being lucky.

Ahhh - I was reading around about this and started wondering, thanks for clearing it up... I can't seem to find another 68 x 113 - is it a bit of an odd/specialised (pardon the pun, seeing as I've got a Specialized...) size? Or have I been provided with duff info...
I'm going to get the tools and extract it at some point, so that should clear up (assuming it's got marking/I can still read them)what type I need. Might pop down the local LBS and see if they've got any spacers knocking around. Worst case scenario - it's only £4. I've spent more on coffee today... (my excuse being it's work deadline day...)
It's running okay at the moment as I managed to get some lube in - but am guessing that's a sign it's on the way out. I suppose 4k miles isn't too shabby, so I'm not too upset by that.
I might just man up and get a new cranks set - I reasoned with myself that I'd curb the spending by only replacing/updating things that have broken, rather than being attracted by shiny new things...
Cheers again,
Rich
BB itself may be fine - can easily be dry threads, try re-installing first.
Cheers - will try. Tools are on their way so will see how that goes.
Thanks,
Rich
Rich,
Just get a spacer.
Ask on here and someone will post you one for next to nothing.
All the new external BBs come with 3 spacers, so bikes with a 73mm shell have 2 spares/leftovers/potential-4-U.
