OK, I'm obviously misunderstanding something or being a complete dafty here.
My old XT 1 x 10 crankset went faulty so I bought a new one. Old one was 104bcd. Bought 96bcd and a shiny new 96 bcd sunrace chainring. The chainring doesn't fit on the crankset. I can align two of the bolts with the other 2 very misaligned. What's the problem?
Thanks!
TS
New one probably has the shimano asymmetric bolt pattern. Needs a different chainring!
Thank you. What a pain in the crack! Why was I so stupid to think the standard wouldn't have changed.
TS
lol. You wait for one standard change, then three come along at once.
Got a new MTB a handful of years ago, I don't think anything was same from the old one. Fair enough. Then another MTB last year - even more different standards đŸ™‚
It’s crazy the way things change. Ordered the superstar one above (thanks) and sent the other one back.

96 BCD symmetrical only lived for a while, and was driven in part by the popularity of 29ers, where we needed smaller rings than the 104 'standard' could handle.
Then it went 96mm assymmetric... and now finally Shimano has gone direct mount.
I too am looking for a new crankset and am astounded at the prices. Once upon a time you got three chainrings and a BB with your cranks, now you just get bare cranks. Why are 2x cheaper than 1x even for the same model. I was looking at an SLX 1x and noticed the same in 2x was actually cheaper!
How does that work?
