Hey everyone.

I am in the process of re-building a 2001 Hardrock which belonged to a close family member who is no longer with us, I have stripped the bike down and will be keeping just the frame and forks the rest was badly weathered and I will be changing with newer parts and using the bike for light use.

It currently has a square taper BB on it and triple crankset, I have a 10s wheelset, cassette and chain on order and would like to go for a 1 x 10 set up however I am not sure what is needed?

Is there a 1 x 10 crankset which would fit this BB, or can I change the square taper BB to a modern threaded one and use a normal 1 x crankset?

Any help appreciated.

If the bottom bracket is still running smooth, I'd be tempted to keep it and the crankset, and fit a chainring of whatever size you want to it in the middle position.

Any standard threaded crankset will fit the frame (68/73 mm threaded BB).

Or just fit a single middle chainring to the existing cranks. From memory, the old Specialized cranks were five bolt. Those may be harder to find.

If they are standard Shimano four bolt cranks, then steel Deore rings are cheap and durable. You can use the existing derailleur as a chain guide, or fit a proper chain guide. It all depends on your budget.

Well the brand spanking new Spesh Rockhopper Elite comes with a Stout square taper fitment single ring crankset on a 73mm wide by 122.5mm spindle square taper BB, so without a doubt they're out there to buy, like THIS ONE for example

I'd whip the rings off and fit a 1x narrow wide ring from ebay for £8 or so in the middle ring position.

Measure the BCD and count the arms of the crank. If its 4x104 you are in luck cheap rings down to 30T

if 5x110 then less lucky but you can still get cheapish rings but I think the smallest is 34t

If it has the chainset I think it has (I used to own a couple of these bikes) the rings are not removeable so you won't be able to fit a new ring to them as people above have suggested.

Any new chainset will fit, and if the ring is 10, 11 or 12 speed it'll work with your ten speed set up.

Spa cycles or SJS cycles have a good selection of square taper cranks.

Work out what size you would like and email them. Both are usually good for advice.

I'm about to put my original Spesh Strongarm cranks back on my 97 rockhopper A1. Should make it look original 🙂

I've got the 5 bolt cranks, so I printed off the template from Sheldon Brown to check the BCD (94mm) and I'm going to order + fit a Surly steel single ring. No chance of narrow/wide on 5 bolt and it's my commuter bike these days.
