New bike coming soon so looking for:

68/73mm BB

Not carbon

Down to 28t chainring

Not silly money

I've always run Shimano hollowtech stuff but chainring size seems to be limited to 30t and want to go lower if I can.

One I've running RF Turbine cranks for a while now and I really like them.

The cinch stem is fantastic. Such a simple but great idea to get preload on the bearings spot on.

28T knocks out a lot of options. Really impressed with the Raceface Aeffect I put on the fatbike though, crazily good value (and works with a shimano BB so no worries on longevity).

Never met a SRAM BB that wasn't pure shite but they can be really good value to buy

Was gonna say Aeffect too. For the simple reason that it's got a 'normal' sized axle, which the more expensive Turbine doesn't (24mm vs 30mm).

No issues with my GX crankset so far, simple to fit chainring and cranks, though you really do have to crank up the bolt to get the cranks tight. Running a sram BB too but too early to know if it's better or worse than previous cheapy shimano ones.

Always been a Shimano man but I have to say I've been well impressed with the RaceFace Aeffect ones that came on my swoop.

Out of curiosity does the Aeffect crank use the cinch, the same as the Turbine?

Yes.

Cool, might be a good budget option for a build I'm doing. I really rate the cinch system. 🙂

After reading this I think I may change to the Aeffect on my full-sus 29er.

Does the crankarm attachment work better than RF of old, with the self-extracting bolt faff?

Thread hijack, sorry, but I've got a RaceFace aeffect that's brand new I've been thinking of selling so if anyone wants to make me a sensible offer, bearing in mind they're £130 on CRC I might part with it. It was taken off a new Vitus Sommet, it's got slight marks on the teeth from the chain after being ridden round the street but hasn't been ridden otherwise so is totally unmarked other than that. 170mm cranks, with 32T chainring. matt dot will at email dot com if anyone's interested.

FSA Gradiant modular?.. Literally any BB and chainline configuration and down to 28t megatooth (n/w) rings
670g but tough enough for a dh bike.

Cheers folks. Think I'll look at the aeffect then. Liking the Shimano BB option with that as well.

Man up and 30t is an option but I've been harder than that for the past year or so with a 32t and want the option for going lower if and when I want.

Exactly what I'm running and happy with it. Don't bother with the RaceFace BB, just stick a 12 quid XT one in.

Chapaping - Aeffect have no extractor bolt, so are removed with a ISIS style crank puller.

UBYK have them for £122 with ring, or £92 without and get a superstar cinch oval.

What about running these on a boost frame? Do I need an offset chainring?

On my turbines I had to fit a Boost chainring. Some frames you won't even need to do that if my experience is anything to go by.

Currently using an Absolute Black Oval ring available in boost/ non boost. Works Components also do some great value rings,boost/non boost too. 🙂

New Shimano BCD will do 28t round won't it? I've a 30t oval on mine and I thought you could go 2 less for round

Hmm. Apparently not then.

If the slx hadn't been ok for me I would have had an aeffect if that helps?

Inexplicably Shimano changed the BCD but not by enough to fit smaller chainrings.

It let them fit 30t I guess. The fact that everyone else was already doing it with 104bcd is apparently besides the point. It let me fit a 30t oval, so I'm happy.

With a Boost frame you should really fit a ring with the correct offset for Boost. Whether it clears your chainstay is one thing, whether it gives you the correct chainline is quite another especially if 1x11.  It’s claimed that if you stray from 52mm on Boost you’ll be wearing your cassette and chain faster than might be expected as a result of the chainline being off design spec.  Dunno how true, but seems silly for a company selling multi-hundred pound cassettes to say it if it isn’t.

Ummmm.might just order a boost and non boost ring  then. See what fits best when the frame arrives.

Cheers

My hardtail will only run a boost chainring (or cranks) anything else catches the chainstay bridge. The full suss works with either without any issues at all.
