Hi all,
I have two bikes and I wanted to swap the crankset from one to the other, so I have....
2004/5 Giant Trance 1 with a Saint M800 crankset. Not 100% which BB at the moment.
Specialized Pitch Comp 2011 with the stock GXP2 2.1 crankset. BB GXP, outboard bearing.
Would they be interchangeable?
Or would I need to change BBs and buy a ton of bits and bats?
I've never messed with a BB in my life but, want the Saint cranks just for aesthetics, not sure they will be much better, lighter I think, but they will look the part.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
John.
You need to change the BB's as well cos shimano will not fit in truvativ/sram bb and vice versa. That said, it is pretty straightforward once you have a tool for it and to undo the cap on the left hand side of the saint cranks, in fact the outboard bb cups usually have little arrow to remind you which way to remove/refit them. (one side is reverse thread). Same too for shimano and truvativ bb's too which is always nice. Park tools website is great for this sort of thing.
What he said. Not sure what the latest GXP BB are like, I had loads of bad experience with them back in 2007, and have since run a mile.
Not knowing which crankset is on the Pitch, but I doubt the Saint will be lighter. Saints made in 04-05 weighed about 5 million tonnes. Bloody strong though.
Bought a BB spanner, not checked if it will fit both, fingers crossed.
it'll fit both, but i'd just save yourself some time and buy another set of shimano cranks and bb. gxp/truvativ are shit.
The crankset isn't the original I don't think, looks like this one.

Will need to check the BBs will fit in either bike, it's the BB shell I need to measure I'm guessing.
Del - I'm starting to think that way!!!!
Both bikes have 68mm BBs so I'm guessing its a case of check em and swap em.
Running GXP here (Sram/Truative X9) nice quality cranks, well put together and working fine. Using a Hope BB (as on all my bike) with a GXP conversion. The "It's all crap" argument doesn't seem to stand u that well these days.
Sait wouldn't be on my list even if I was racing DH these days though far too heavy.
Having seen the Sram X0 options and the RF offerings I'm not sure I would be back with Shimano cranks in the near future.
Running X0 redwing everything and I've always thought it was good gear. I was only going to the Saint crankset because I was under the jmpredsion it was a better set.
Saint is a heavy Freeride/DH crankset unless your off to rampage then the XO is probably a lot better.
Not in a rush to do rampage in all fairness haha
Sorry the the crank I have at the mo is the GXP2 its my the rest of my running gear thats X0.
If it's running fine I'd be in no hurry to swap it out. Neither really sound like the sort of bike I'd equip saint on really.
Its a custom build Pitch Comp 2011 the crank is the only original part.
