Looking to make the change to 11 or 12 speed on a bit of a budget so will be shopping around for the bits.
Currently have XTR M970 cranks and wondering if any of the newer stuff is any better and if it would be worth replacing them too.
Don't really want to spend extra on replacing the cranks if I don't need to so thinking I should stick with them.
Anyone changed to the newer Shimano stuff and found the cranks to be any better?
Thoughts?

So you’re going 1x on the M970s? Maybe chainline could be an issue but it may depend on the frame too, boost spacing etc.

I'm currently 1 x 10, non-boost frame.

I would say that theyre about the same tbh. However chainring choice for a full Shimano 12 speed set up would be an issue I expect. Anything 11 or SRAM should be easy enough though.

+1 the issue won't be chainline, it'll be ring choice.

They are great cranks.
Not much reason to change I don't think.
Only improvements have been direct mount which allow you to run sub 30T chainrings. But if you are ok currently on 10 speed that wont be an issue.
I suppose 30mm axles are nice but not worth the change IMO

I'd keep them. They are still nice, relatively light/stiff cranks. A Burgtec ring works with a 12 speed Shimano chain. Chainline is 50mm in the middle position IIRC so should be alright.

Another fan here. Nothing significantly lighter for the robustness. The only real downside is the inability to run <30T rings, which if you're on 12speed shouldn't be an issue.

I've found the chainline is fine on the 2 boost spaced bikes I've built - arguably better as its a hair more biased towards climbing gears, which are the ones you inevitably use more of the time.

30mm axles just mean less BB life and worse sealing (no room for the central sleeve between the cups).

No issues with my Hope threaded 30mm BB. Doesn't appear to have tiny bearings as they sit outside the frame. maybe its the internal ones...?
