Anyone in the Leeds area got a set of wedges to help remove it?
I've stripped the removal threads with the crank puller and before I take a blowtorch to it I was wondering if anyone had any chuck removal wedges to try with
Thanks in advance
Do you want to use the cranks again? If not, remove the bolts and ride it and the crank will fall off. You'll ruin the square taper and the crank won't seat properly again.
Cheers Tazzy
Don't suppose you're Leeds-based at all?
(And cheers tired - I'd prefer to keep the crank, at least in the short-term)
Find a shop with a Stein thread-cutter & remover.
Same happened to me so I just took a bit metal persuader to it and after a few massive hits it flew off across the work shop.
Cheers Al - is this a time-consuming job for someone with said tool?
Just in case I get asked for more money than the bike is worth!!

Yeah - tried the crank puller, then lots of penetrator and a mallet and then the puller again and then the mallet
Then bust a nice big screwdriver trying to prise it off
I've got a large motorcycle tyre lever that I'm going to try later (if I can get any space or leverage). Personally I think the bracket is nigh-on original and hasn't been changed in 18yrs...it's still working but I need it out to powder coat the frame)
I've used the paint stripper gun and the cranks come off real easy.
Is this bad practice then?
ive used a medium sized 3 legged gear puller to pull em off before.
Take a cold chisel, nest it on the back of the arm next to the crank spindle. Get it as near to parallel with the crank spindle as possible & a couple of wacks with a lump hammer will see it fly off.
Removing the nut/bolt first helps.
[Obviously I have never forgotten the last bit] 😳
Don't be doing any banging if you want to keep the bottom bracket! Smacking the crank off will dent the BB bearing balls into their races.

In which case, follow the advice tired gave, but keep close to home and pay attention to the crank getting loose - stop as soon as it does.
Pah...get a hammer on it man. 🙂
got a feeling that the bottom bracket can be sacrificed...the bike has had one owner from new and he's ridden it into the ground
it still works ok but I only want it out in order to get the frame recoated. its the original bottom bracket from 1994 and it still works so I'd like to send it to the people who design external BBs and ask them to learn from it

Of course they already know that making things that last this long is very bad business indeed.
the paint stripper gun
Gentle heat applied to the crank is your friend if you want to retain the BB and crank, especially if you're not worried about the paint.
Waits for thread 'How do I remove a bb from a frame after 18 years'
😆
Hehe - yeah, well I'm working up to that one
That's why I'm loathe to chuck the crank!
Be gentle and use a ball joint splitter
Now that looks exactly what I need - halfords have em for eight quid
Cheers voodoo
Never been defeated with one, and i have removed many, many crank arms
So just slip the fork between frame and crank and gently tap?
Or do you use the screw-in one (pulling from behind)?

nope, 15 minutes, the tools are rare tho.
