I recently purchased a new frame and the crank q factor is 168, which limits the Shimano cranks available as most are 172, with the exception of the XRT range.

Does it really matter? Or can I ignore the 168 and run Shimano XT cranks with a q factor of 172?

Cheers

Just means you have the option of running the narrower Q factor option that some prefer (tend to be from road background). Nothing to stop you using the wider Q-Factor at all.

Perfect, I was hoping that was the case.
Thanks

Some narrower cranks won't clear the chain stays as they are now wider for fatter tyres.

My xtr m9000 cranks (narrow q factor) wouldn't fit a scandal but the xtr m9020 would (wider q factor)

Yeah, you can always go wider and obviously probably won't notice 2mm each side wider. But it's possible to go too narrow and buy cranks that will foul your frame. Don't do that.
