Hi all, total berk on the tools here.

I need to purchase a crank puller tool and have NO idea what I am looking at... looking to do more work on my own bikes to learn a bit about maintenance.

I have one bike with SRAM XO, one with SRAM NX and one with Shimano SLX drive train and RaceFace Cranks.

Would any of these do the job for all three (and any future bikes)??

Also, if there are any other MUST HAVE tools I should be looking at then let me know 🙂

Muchos Gracias!

Which Raceface cranks? They often have self extracting bolts fitted and don't need a puller tool. SLX and other shimano 24mm cranks do not need one. Once the pinch bolts are loose and the safety tab moved they should come off easily.

Those ones you've linked to are for pulling old style square taper and similar, (octolink etc) where the spindle is part of the bottom bracket. On at least a couple of what you have you just remove one of the cranks and bash the spindle, which is attached to the other crank through the bearing cups with a soft face mallet.

There's actually no such thing as a truly universal crank puller.

If the SRAM cranks are GXP or DUB variants they won't require a puller - you just undo the 8mm bolt which acts as a self-extractor.

Those crank pullers are for old square-taper bottom brackets, not your SRAM or SLX cranks. There are lots of videos on YouTube that'll show you what you need, and how to do it. Allen keys are often all it takes.

I’d suggest going on the Park Tool website for the videos, match your crank types to the right video and see how it’s done and which tool needed (doesn’t need to be the park-tool version!) As indicated above there are lots of different standards and therefore tools (or not in the case of self-extracting etc.) It can be a minefield, even for those that have grown up through every standard known to the MTB world, nevermind coming in cold… good luck.

Other tools: get yourself a good quality chain breaker tool as a starter for 10. And possibly a good quality spoke key (and get on the park tool website for ‘how-to’.)

What frogstomp said.

If the SRAM cranks are GXP or DUB variants they won’t require a puller – you just undo the 8mm bolt which acts as a self-extractor.

And many Raceface cranks are also self extracting.
