I think 170mm is stnadrd, but there's bargains to be had in 175mm. I assume it won't make any difference the extra 5mm?

Majority of mtb's come with 175's as stock.I can tell the difference straight away...but most can't.

Just looked on the commuter bike and they're 175mm and I did a week's touring without dying.

I think 175 is more "standard". That's what I'm running, although I've read that for short arses like myself a 170 mm might be preferable. I don't have any problems with my 175 cranks though.

175mm on nearly all my bikes but i also have a 180mm set on my FS. Can't say i notice any difference at all.

You'll get used to either. I can instantly notice the difference when riding but after you've done a few hundred miles you'll get used to it. I used to prefer 175mm but had a slower pedalling style than I do currently have and I now it turns out I prefer 170mm.
