I've been using eggbeaters for more than 10 years. When my last pair was completely worn I bought a set of 3's. They came with the rubish race cleat that is so small that it gets into the sole bolt channel. Anyway, I decided to buy the shoe shield to distribute pressure and avoid the new cleats eating (even more) through the sole.

What were great pedals became garbage as engaging became almost impossible, so I wrote and email to CB customer service that was basically a summary of this review: http://coachlevi.com/product-reviews/crank-bros-shoe-shields/ which expresses my exact issue.

Today I got a reply:
...
We actually recommend the Crankbrothers Shoe Shields for Carbon Soles. Below is the link.

https://www.crankbrothers.com/accessories_shoe-shields
....

So it got me wondering ... did she even read my email??

I know I'm not alone with this shoe shield issue, can't think why CB hasn't done something to the shoe shield in all these years...do they actually work for someone?

You could just avoid eggbeaters instead.

FWIW, i have one or two pairs of them floating around (fiúnnily enough, on SIDIs but with time pedals) and i've never had an issue. Ever.

The sliding easy to float feel is why i bought slidy, easy floating pedals in the first place. I reckon i've had them fitted for near enough 10 years, with no issues. Still in place. No damage to the sole underneath either.

Actually, that reminds me. I should get new ones, just got some new shoes a couple of weeks ago that'll be pressed into service in the spring.

@PlumzRichard: Email sent, thanks.

@ghostlymachine: I didn't quite get it, are you using Time or CB pedals?

(I'm using Time Atac in my commuter by the way).

Time pedals. The bars can eat the sole of your shoe, especially if it's got minimal tread.

Just wanted to update on the issue:
The guys from ExtraUk (thanks guys, great CS) sent me a set of the new cleat version as the cleats that came with my new pedals were and older one.
Swapped the cleats and problem solved, no issues whatsoever.

Best of all is I can keep riding CB!

For a few weeks at least. Have you ever ridden in the winter in the UK?
