I bought some crank Bros pedals a short while ago. I have used them four or five times and have the same problem constantly.

The spring that sits on the central shaft seems to make its way to one side and then jam the two "wings" open so as to prevent me being able to clip in. On the last ride I expended more energy wrestling with the pedals than I did riding. It means having to stop and centralise the spring with a screw driver for it to happen again after a few cycles of the unclipping/clipping process.

The consensus on the ride was "that's what you get for buying shite!" But surely they are not fit for purpose? Is this something they suffer from and I should have stayed with Shimano or should I return them for another pair?

I've been running CB Candies on my road/tourer/commuter for over a year with absolutely no issues, so it's not something inherent in the design of the pedal. Sounds like they are borked and you should just take them back to the shop.

Take them back. OK CB pedals suffer a few durability issues but I've never heard of this before. Find your receipt and return them, say I.

Well known mail order shop just refunded me and did not even attempt to send another pair. I would tend to think that there may be an issue with these pedals from that. Used the funds to buy some shimano.

Borked ones were candies BTW.
