I have replaced the cleats on my crank bros pedals but when I am clicked in and riding, I notice that putting the power down hard and when climbing out of the saddle results in an annoying click. It's as if although the cleat is clicked into the pedal the power seems to push the cleat into the pedal even further.
Sorry if it sounds a little vague, but I wanted to ask whether others have experienced this and if so how do you fix it?
Thanks
I had that.
...then the threaded end of the axle snapped.
Also had it on another set when the bearings disintegrated mid ride.
Changed to Time years ago and they've been faultless
Probably time for a rebuild, after 12 years I've gone back to Shimano, want egg beaters for the commuter and mallets for the big bike but got fed up eventually of rebuilding and failing pedals 🙁
Yes. That does have the familiar ring of impending doom...
Out Mallets clicked like that - I stripped, cleaned, re-greased etc.
Then the bearings failed mid ride, seizing the pedal.
Shockingly bad sealing.
All crank bros products with moving parts usual result in a long walk back to the car at least once a year, pedals been the worst!
Funnily enough a pair of mine started doing this last week i was convinced it was the bb but swapped to another pair of old candys and it stopped. Unfortunately these imploded mid ride. Im currently waiting for the postman to drop off some shimano spds to try out. Ive never used shimano so fingers crossed.
Pedals dug a hole in your sole?
Yeah that can happen i used to use sole savers with them a thin layer of metal to protect the sole
Depending on the age of them, it sounds as if the outside axle bearings are on their way out. This will actually be caused by excess play in the internal side axle bushing (if they are the older style ones with bushings). The bushing wears, puts a rotational load on the external bearing, and the bearing fails spectacularly after a time. A simple check for axle play will answer this - and a rebuild kit is what you need to fix 'em..
Yep, bearings about to explode, you'll end up with one part on your shoe and the axle on the bike.
Like above, I tried for years with Eggbeaters, even used higher spec bearings to try and increase life, one walk home too many, and some mug on ebay bought the lot, I had Candys, Mallets and normal ones. Cost a bit to change all bikes over to Shimano, however no problems since.
I do hear that the newer ones are better, too little too late for me.
Cheers chaps. It's not the shoes as I already have the metal sole savers underneath the cleats.
I think after 4 pairs of egg beaters I might try a different brand.
I thought I would post an update here following a chat with Crank Brothers in the US regarding this issue. Tech Support where really helpful and suspect the secondary click is due to the fact that the pedal body is too far away from the shoe when clicked in. They suggested that I need to install the Crank Bros Tread Contact Sleeves to the pedal. This will then make the pedal touch the shoe so that you don't get the secondary click that I currently am experiencing.
