Anyone know if there is any shooting going on up on the moors at the moment ? Planning a cheeky ride over the edges but dont want to fall foul of any gamekeepers etc.

Cheers.

Hi Dave long time. Yes shooting season has started in earnest. Nothing stops the toffs playing Rambo. BW from rylstone to Barden will still be open. Unfortunately it’s been sanitised into a gravel road. Only about 1/4 mile of the original track remains. Better to head further north imho and head out hetton, kilnsey, malham etc.

I'm up there a couple of times a week on my local XC loop, Dave - not seen/heard much actual shooting going on but the occasional land rover is sitting about.

There would never be any shooting near the path from Cracoe Pinnacle to the BW at the fell gate, for obvious reasons (many, many walkers). So you'd be fine to head up that way as an out-and-back. There's not much point heading north of the pinnacle away towards Thorpe because it's not great. Past the Thorpe Bridleway, around the reservoirs and on the eastern flank you are far more likely to encounter shooting parties. There's a shooting hut up that way.

Cracoe Pinnacle to the BW is a good tricky, techy descent in places. Keep meaning to go up and session it properly, and link it to Embsay reservoir via Fairy Steps and the top of Crookrise.

Cheers chaps. You still in Skipton Stuart or did you move?

I was thinking of coming along the edge from Thorpe but noticed the shooting butts.

Thats the one I was thinking but will probably leave till next year now.

There seems to be a faint track underneath the crags from the top of the Thorpe BW on Google Earth. But it's not rideable for large parts, not recommended. Pushing up to the track is a bit of a pain but quicker.

I think there will be a fair bit of moist ground on the route through to the reservoir. It's certainly a descent which is more rideable after a dry spell. There's a nice loop with descents off to Thorpe and down towards Burnsall when it's dry, and not in shooting season.

Yep, ruined for MTB's but good for gravel bikes.

It's a shame, and seems to have been done for no reason whatsoever. The mess of road chippings ends about 500 yards before the gate, and there are no shooting butts anywhere to be seen in that area.

No shooting on Sundays.

The roundhouses make a good place to doss on Saturday nights...

No we moved to Embsay 10 years ago, which scarily is the year after we did the last STW Northern chapter ride, skipton killer loop.
