Cleaning the bike yesterday and noticed this in the seat tube:

Have sent a contact form off to Canyon but don't expect to hear back until at least after the long weekend - what do people here think?

Have you posted pics ok in the past?

If not just host them on postimage.org and click "hotlink for forums." No need to sign up or anything.

That's what I wondered about.

Did the Etape Du Dales last Sunday - quite relieved it didn't fail on one of those long fast Yorkshire descents!

Looks like I'll be on the winter bike for a while 🙁

How far down is your seatpost? Hopefully it hasn’t been down far enough to hit the taper in the tube

Shouldn't be - I ride a frame on the smaller size (56cm - I'm 6 feet), so the seatpost is always at a pretty reasonable height - have never slammed it.

The paint seems to be all over the crack. I'd suggest that it's not a crack at all, but a manufacturing flaw.

If you've been riding this for a bit, just monitor it while you wait for a response from the manufacturer.

Carbon bikes are actually very tough and unless it's a sub 700gm frame there's sufficient lower grade carbon in it to ensure that even if there is an underlying structural problem, any stress you put on it won't cause an instant failure, you'll certainly notice additional flex and noise far before it will get th the point of failure.

And are you putting 1200 watts into it regularly? Do you weigh over 100kg's, are there any other unusual riding characteristics that put unusually high stress on the frame? Unless you do, you are pretty unlikely to ever have probs with what I've seen in your pics.

That doesn’t look like I’d expect a carbon failure to look - it’s more like a chunk of crap got stuck to the tube and was then painted over.
I’d be interested in what they say though.

I'd go with paint failure. As rockhopper suggests it looks almost like a blister radiating from a single point. Possible a defect in application (lump/ debris) or an impact starting a crack letting moisture in.

I would expect a CF crack to look different. Less branching and more propagation. With it being on the edge as well it would be an area of high stress for paint.

No to all those questions. The only challenging characteristics are the occasional pothole on our badly maintained Surrey/London roads.

I'm not far from their service centre so I might drop it in there on Tuesday morning as we are going away for the rest of the week and see what they say.

Looks like impact or paint damage / contamination - there's nothing obvious about the structural shape that would lead to crack propagation unless it's been struck by something reasonably sharp.

Dear Scott

Thank you for your email.

I have fantastic news. We will be replacing your frame under Guaranty.
Currently team in Germany is working on checking and allocating correct parts for the frame swap.
You will be able to shortly see order confirmation under your account, this will allow you to track the frame journey to us.

We will contact you as the frame arrives here to provide more details.

Definitely cracked then...

Did they actually look at it to confirm that? No way they could tell from just a photo, just good/cautious customer service.

Perhaps it's the photograph, but is there a ridge/edge running down the centre of the seat tube; couldn't that potentially act as a stress riser?

I dropped it into the service centre. THey evaluated it and sent the report off to Germany who then validated the report and authorised the replacement. Took 2 weeks for that.

Lovely colour BTW!

Thanks - I love the colour btw.

I bloody hope not!

Think that's just the angle of the photograph.

Update on this.

Frame arrived last Monday. On Friday they were building it up.

Got a call today to say that it looks like the headset has worn through fork steerer 😳

They think the headset was either faulty or not fitted correctly in the factory.

New forks are on order now. They have promised to lend me some forks and build it up in time for ride London if the ordered set are delayed...

Yeah, its integrated, with an awful way of tightening it IMO. When I dropped the bike in for the inspection, the mechanic said that it felt loose - so the movement from when it keeps loosening has rubbed against the steerer tube I guess.

I noticed the cracked frame just after I did Etape Du Dales in May - full of long fast descents - I'm quite relieved it all held up for that ride!
