Hi,

So today i was doing some bike maintenance on my Evil Wreckoning. Had the swing arm of to change the bearings and after some inspection noticed a hairline crack. Not sure if its just the paintwork or a dreaded crack in the carbon? have a look and the pics thoughts would be appreciated, cheers.

Doesn't look good IME - jaggy edge in particular and the way that the surface coat has flaked-off in places shows there's movement. Can you flex / press to see if it moves?

Agreed. I'd not be riding that without getting a carbon guy to examine it. If it goes suddenly it'll cause lots more damage in addition to the potential pain...

That isn't just paint, hope it's under warranty. If so get the photo off to who you purchased from.

Good luck

I'd say that's a crack and as above, Evil don't have a great reputation for warranty.

If it were me, I'd start investing carbon repairs and prepare myself for having to take the hit.

It certainly looks like a crack from the pictures. There is also a deep stone chip into the carbon at one end of the crack. Have a look and see if there is a similar stone chip at the adjacent part of the front triangle as it is possible you have had a stone stuck in the gap between the front triangle and the swingarm which has caused damage when the swingarm was moving. My Wreckoning picks up the occasional stone in this way so I am always on the lookout for it happening as the stone gets crushed between the two moving parts if not removed. Evil's crash replacement programme is relatively painless and quick - I had to get a Following rear triangle a few years ago and it cost around £400 back then.

With the right video and some stuff off the internet is that crack something you could fix at home?

Yeah Ive noticed this happening as well. Ive tried to come up with an idea of how to customise a mudguard to stop it happening. Any ideas?

I thought Evil's reputation for cracking frames and issues with warranty were early on and they've sorted themselves out since both in terms of making the frames less susceptible to cracking and in their warranty responses?

I'd give Evil a chance to put right...they might come up trumps or maybe offer you a cheap crash replacement kind of deal. They might surprise you. You can then get this one repaired and have a spare for the next time it happens.

A mate of mine is considering an Evil frame right now so would be interesting to see if they do come up trumps. I just don't understand why bike manufacturers don't put plastic protection pieces at exposed edges like that which are likely to be heavily exposed to wear and abrasion. Carbon is not a very good material for erosion or abrasion type of mechanism...Looks to me like the crack propagated from a rock strike, or similar impact, in the corner and propagated out along the chain or seat stay as it is an area of high stress so as soon as its compromised the stress levels increase and the crack propagates out. Some additional impact protection in this area would have prevented this.

Yeah, I had thought the same from recent reviews. Time will tell i suppose....

If it was down to just choosing a bike on how it rides and not taking the warranty issue into consideration, i would 100% recommend a wreckoning. I absolutely love it.

Speak to your retailer first, they should expedite the warranty.

Where is this info coming from?

I've dealt with the Euro Evil guys a fair amount, and been chatting to Dylan in the US arm of Evil and they've been amazing. Really helpful, super quick to respond and have sent me some stuff out for free.

In the very recently history of Evil, post-Undead, I've seen three damaged Evil frames. There's one horror story, and it's from a guy who was doing pretty massive Hucks who snapped his frame.

Get in touch, be totally open and honest with the guys, and they'll do their best to sort it out.

Get a second opinion if you feel like you've been treated unfairly - by using a carbon specialist.

Worst case, is a crash replacement front end. You could ask for Wrecker LB with the bottle bosses too 🙂

So Evil came up with the goods straight away! After getting in contact with the Evil and the company I bought the bike from, I got a response from both immediately. All I had to do after a few emails back and forth was send the rear triangle out to Evil in Madrid along with a few pics of the front triangle. Once they had the rear triangle they sent a brand new one out right away. No hassles!

Excellent! Always good to hear about companies standing behind their products and treating their customers well.

This tread does go to show how difficult it is to overcome a bad reputation
