Hi,
I'd noticed a cracked chain-link so was replacing the chain today (SRAM GX Eagle 12sp). However, when I took it off and inspected closely I found 4 cracked links. That seems unusual to me, but we've only had 12sp in the family for a couple of years. Bike is a 2018 Cannondale Habit SE, purchased mid-summer 2019, cleaned/lubed after each ride, etc. It's been used a little more in 2020 (mostly XC and local bridleways) but I'm not a heavy or super frequent user by any means.
Is that the kind of wear I should expect from 12speed?
Cheers,
Kev
Others will know better than me but I think I've head of this before.
Is it a GX level chain? Being oem it probably is.
Yes I've had that with a GX level chain. 3 or 4 cracks at around 1200 miles. Never had it with any other chain.
A mate of mine had exactly the same problem. Chain snapped 200 meters from the start of a ride, when we looked there were at least half a dozen cracked links.
Luckily we were only 5 mins from a bike shop.
OK, thanks folks.
I guess I'll take it as part of the annual cost of doing my favoured activities.
At least they don't cost as much as the replacement Shimano 12sp for my son's when I was ordering various spares this afternoon. May we'll sample the KMC x12 to try those, and they'd be compatible with multiple family bikes.
