I noticed that there is now a load of Cows at the East-End of Cragg Quarry and loads of mud where the cows are walking around. The cows are often blocking the trail, I know someone who crashed into one recently and banged his knee on some rocks. Apparently that's the farmers fault though putting a trailer of hay right next to the track, all the space on the moor and he puts it near the track.

Is it farmeland belonging to the farmer?

I'm not sure who owns the land that the Cragg Quarry trail is on, maybe someone else on here will know

Damned farmers! He should have used his farm helicopter to put the hay over the side of the moor.

(And although I’m laughing at someone crashing into a cow, I know someone who rode towards a large rock, meaning to ride over it, before he realised it was a cow lying on the ground.)

Think trying to get any serious Strava times for laps of Cragg Quarry are out of question for the time being

Don't you think it's funny

That nothing's what it seems

When you're, not looking forward...

OP - did you shout 'moove' at them? Normally gets a response.

How exactly do you crash into a cow? It’s not like it’s hard to see.

I don’t bother with Cragg much nowadays. The slog up the Coal Road is just far too much heifert

Bloody farmers trying to earn a living from land owned or leased. How dare they try and stay off the boggy moors and use the track for tractors to feed cattle without wading through mud or snow...

Someone is on for a right hiding....

It's probably part of the Urban Common and someone enjoying their commoners rights

If you crash into one of the cows you are a spoon

Look at that photo, This is what I'm talking about... I'm not arsed about the Cows being in the way as I don't tend to ride into them, but the mud is unreal. That used to actually be a trail.

by "trail" do you mean purpose built MTB track or farmers access track that bikes are permitted to ride upon that he has been using in the bad weather to get essential food to his beasts?

The countryside is a working place with people making their living from.  Its not just a playground

It's a trail built on farmland and uses some farm tracks. Can't see the problem. It's also been pretty wet recently as well.

I've found a few ways around it now so it's not a big deal really anymore.

If your accessing Cragg Quarry from the East side (Waterfoot side) - instead of heading onto the cow shit track - just stay on the Pennine Bridleway for a couple of miles. This part of the PBW is flat so its no big deal. You come to a multiple junction further on where Cragg Quarry, the PBW & the route up to Scout Moor all converge. You can access Cragg Quarry from here.

When you're on Cragg Quarry, doing a full lap of it, you can take a shortcut just before you get to the East end that misses out the cow shit track. It is not difficult to find, when you're at the very east end of Cragg, just head off the Cragg track, go off piste for about 30 metres and rejoin the Cragg track further on.

You do know this countryside exists for more than a bike trail?

I imagine the rider who hit the cow was going full fat into a corner , skimmed the cow and flew pasteurize in an instant. 🙂
