things i gots to know
1) bb height, is it a low one ? where i ride means that a low bb = endless pedal strikes
2) will it ride well with a 140 Pike or does it need a longer fork to get the right head angle for trail riding ?
3) how do they size up ? thinking of 17.5 frame, i'm 5'10 with long monkey limbs.
4) know of anyone that's ever broken one ?
5) will everyone point and laugh if i get a shitty brown one ?
Hi
The bottom bracket will be fine, I very rarely suffer pedal strikes
Pikes are perfect for trail riding
Im about the same height and ride a 17.5 and use a 410 Thomson post
I broke one at the seatpost, top tube interface
Shit brown is nothing my new ones bright pink 😉
I love mine, thats why I bought another after the first snapped, they climb well and descend even better and gets used for everything.
Hey Trailmonkey.
I rode a Cove Hustler for about 3yrs so here's my answer to your questions...
1. It's not low, it's not stupidly high either though. I ride in v. rocky places and I'm really struggling with a Lapierre Zesty I have at the moment because it's too low. The Hustler was perfect though. It's 13.6" according to Silverfish but that doesn't mean anything to me.
2. Pikes are perfect on it. It's what I used.
3. I'm 5'11" and the 17.5 was perfect for me. I could have ridden a larger size too I suppose.
4. I snapped mine. Just to put it in perspective it took me 3yrs and I'm a guide so ride daily. Someone described my kit as living in dog years recently... it's about right! Also I'm riding rocky stuff, DH tracks, jumps etc on it. I think what did for it in the end was the fact that the Fox shock anodising went meaning it was loosing air. That meant I bottomed it out a fair bit and that force goes straight into the seat tube. My seat tube snapped right in the middle.
5. I bought a lovely white one. It ended up brown 🙂 Paint quality was good though, I'd heard bad things but mine was really good. The brown ones are nice, I've seen a few.
I liked me Hustler so much I was going to get another one. Then I saw the GSpot and thought "why not"! My Hustler weighted about 34lbs, built up heavy with big wheels / tyres / saint cranks / 203mm Avids etc. I built up my GSpot and it's between 35 and 36lbs. I honestly think my GSpot goes uphill better than my Hustler, there's just no bob. And going down is a different story, it's incredible. I'm totally happy with my GSpot choice and wouldn't buy another Hustler now, I just think the GSpot is a better bike up and down. I don't know if you've seen my Gspot Review review up on my site? I wrote what I think of it there.
@nigew
thanks for that. just out of interest, how'd you break yours ?
@doug
thanks also, i think that the gspot would just be too much for both me and the trails that i ride. i need something that is pretty durable though as east dartmoor is certainly very rocky and kit gets hammered here regardless of how heavy you ride. current bike made of cheese and i need to upgrade to something fit for puprpose
It's a hard question to answer! It creaked for about a month before it finally went. In the months before I broke it I was riding some DH courses out here with drops around 1.5 meters and some reasonable size jumps but I'd been doing that fairly regularly for the past couple of years. We ride a lot of big / rocky / fast stuff and I'm always trying to clear gaps on the trail (with varying degrees of success!) and generally riding quite fast. I didn't even notice it had broken during my ride (oops!) and it was only the next morning when I went to get it out the van that I noticed the bearins were hanging out the frame and then saw the crack. I think it was the cumulative effects of daily abuse that got it to be honest. I didn't feel particularly aggrieved given what it had been through, none of my kit normally lasts very long.
Did you edit your post there? I thought you asked me how I broke it! 🙂
yeah, sorry 😳
but i was happy to hear how you broke yours too 😀
I've owned 3 in various forms. They don't half take some hammer, and mine was built up heavy as I tend to bollock my way through stuff. Here is my last one now sold to a nice fella in Scotland. Lovely it was. I rode it with Pikes and it was great. Im about 5'10" and always went for a medium. Do I miss it? You bet I do. Brilliant pieces of alloy.
The green looked mint.
I've had mine for 6 years now and love it. Copes with any type of riding from general trail stuff to Peaks/Afan etc. Can handle far more than I can but that's fine as it has never let me down. Bearings last well and are easy to replace when needed. Get a shortish stem and it's a blast on singletrack too.
Mine is from 2006 and I love it! i ride a small and am 5"5 ish. It is still going strong, but it has only ever been ridden by girls .
I have also got a old g spot for the alps, but I am considering a new g spot to replace both....
And yes, pikes are great up front. I now have some fox 36 to go on, but only cos I can run these on both the hustler and the gspot (changing the travel between 140 and 160). I only have 2 frames and 1 set of kit to run either bike.
Also
TO: doug_basqueMTB.com I can't connect to the review, I presume you have the new g spot? I would love some more info on these as I am considering chaining both my hustler and old g spot for one of these.
Thanks
Simone
The comments on the Hustler are spot on. I loved mine... I just love the GSpot even more!
I rode the old GSpot too, loved that but it felt like too much bike for every day, I ended up getting a Hustler and a STD. Now I have the new GSpot instead of the Hustler but to be honest it's sort of replaced the STD too. I think one day (when I have any money) I'll put DH forks on the STD with a single ring and use it as a DH bike. I don't know what I did with that link, try below.

I'll write another, longer term GSpot review soon. I want to put some video with it though and just don't have time at the moment.
I ride a 2007 hustler in white. It replaced a Fuel Ex8 and I much prefer it. Run it at 140mm which seems spot on. Any longer and I think it would be too slack for climbing efficently. Seems really stiff and bomb proof on the downs yet climbs pretty well too. I do find I use pro pedal more than my previous bike though.
I run 1x9 and without spending silly money it is sub 30lbs. Never seen another one around these parts (few stifees) which adds to it's appeal for me.
Oh, and I'm 5'11'' and ride a large with 60mm stem. Medium would be fine too I suspect though. HTH
