I'm picking up my Solaris Max tomorrow which is being built up at my LBS. I really cannot wait to get this bike, can't remember being this excited about a new bike day than this (and I've had a few) Anyone got any Solaris pictures to get me even more giddy? Also feedback on how they ride, I've got fox rhythm 130mm forks, Hunt trail wide wheels and am wondering if it will be a good all round setup.

Can't show you any photos but I'm loving mine. Had it about six weeks. I got the 140mm Trace forks and am using it for my road, gravel and single-track rainforest commutes (mostly flat with some steep tight climbs on st) and also at my local bike parks. I've been surprised by how well it climbs given it's a lot heavier than I'm used to. It descends like a boss though. I put Hope Fortus 30 on with a 2.6 Rekon up front and 2.3 Aggressor rear.

Got mine in July. Lovely bike, climbs quite well, but is really fast and stable descending. Find it easier to handle steep stuff than my trance.

Your setup sounds spot on, I'm running 120mm Yari's because they were cheap but would go for 130mm if I chose again

Echoing above comment, it gives you so much confidence when going down. Super fast.

Somewhat boring and cumbersome on the flatter bits though, but I think this is a trait of long wheelbase bikes in general.

I really want one of these, they look amazing but that’s the thing that puts me off. Ideally I need something that is everything the Solaris Max is but not slow and cumbersome on the flats and climbs. Not actually sure such a bike exists!

Note I didn’t say slow.... But it certainly doesn’t have the fun factor or sprightliness/ instant maneuverability you feel on a shorter/ steeper angled machine on flatter terrain. But then of course that machine would come up short in areas where the Solaris excels. It’s all trade-offs.

Excuse crappy direct from phone pics (if they work - I'm not very clever).

Large Cosmic black. Fox Rythmn forks (changed to 120mm). Stan's flow rims. More when I get a moment.

EDIT* - See, told you I'm not clever. Hang on, I'll try something else.

/\ Nah, not happening.

It looks just like a Large SolarisMax in Cosmic black with Fox Rythmn forks though.

I'll echo other posters comments that it climbs pretty well. It aint a light bike so it doesn't fly uphill, but the long CS keep the arse end planted for traction. You need to buy plenty of brake pads though cos when it starts going down it flies.

Mine is in Cosmic Black - the best colour... Find mine climbs really well TBH, but they are loooooong…Goes downhill like a demon, but mine definitely needs better forks than the 120mm Rebas it currently sports to do it justice. Will also get some wider boost wheels when I change the forks to give me more options on tyres - currently running 2.4/2.3's on non-boost wheels. It has definitely become my "go-to" bike though - very happy so far

140mm 36 forks on mine don't seem overkill at all. I did a one hour singletrack blat with 300m climb this morning and it just smashes through the rough stuff. Tomorrow I'll do almost 3 hours commuting on a mixture of surfaces, gravel, bitumen, singletrack and it'll be super comfortable.

Absolutely love mine, best hardtail I've owned by a long margin. Large Cosmic Black with 130mm 34 Rhythms as well (and Flows with 2.6 Butcher/2.4 Chunky Monkey at the moment). Feels like a really well rounded bike, climbs well enough and descends brilliantly. I've also used it for long bikepacking rides with lighter tyres and it does that well too, comfortable for long days in the saddle, as below.

Currently comapring it to my Giant XTC Advanced. Previously I've always rode XC bikes so looking for something a bit different this time.

Ideally I'd like to get a demo ride sorted on one but it seems that every time Cotic are doing a demo in my neck of the woods I'm working.

Not the OP returning to put your all out of your misery, but I've been enjoying mine for around 10 months now. Yari's with a 130 DebonAir airshaft, M8000 XT, Flow Mk3's on Pro4's... It's done a couple of lightweight bikepacking trips, some big days out, a fair few smaller days out, a day at Bike Park Wales and a relatively XC kind of week in the Pyrenees. Concur with the "wants to go fast" comments.

Hi Clink. I'm a sniff under 6ft 1, on a Large - though I could probably cope with an XL too.

My gut instinct tells me a Med might be for you, but yeah, Def try & sort a demo.

Mine posted further up is a large (35mm stem/saddle fairly far forward/150mm dropper currently but could fit a 170mm). I'm 5'11" but don't have hugely long arms/torso. Very comfortable sat down and I love the length/stability stood up. The size is definitely right for me but if I was any shorter think I'd personally go for a Med.

How do people get on climbing very steep trails?

I was very interested in a Solaris Max having come from a MK2 BFe but the seat angle really put me off as it seems a bit slack given the reach. I had terrible trouble with climbing on the BFe with front wheel lift

I'm 5' 11" on a large. Have done about 130 miles on it so far and loving it. Have spent the last 8 years exclusively on a large mk2 Soul and though the Solaris is a totally different shape, it still feels totally right. It's a good 20cm longer than my Soul and have had to rearrange the garage as a consequence. Not sold my Soul yet and it looks puny next to the Solaris.

The Solaris descends faster than I'm used to, but climbs just like I want it to. Don't skimp on the spec of the wheels and brakes though...

I'm hoping my spec will be a good mid range level. Got rid of my SRAM level t brakes and got a new set of SLX. And the Hunt wheels should be a good upgrade over my Giant wheelset. Think I may look at getting SLX or XT gearing further down the line if my SRAM NX isn't up to it.

How do people get on climbing very steep trails?

I'm finding it really comfortable for this. A few of my regular trails have steep singletrack switchback sections and some of the corners/rock hops require that i lift the front in the turn. I was actually worried it'd be too cumbersome, but actually the weight makes it very planted and the reach means i've got more bar to knee clearance than on my lightweight xc bike when in a tight turn, and don't feel cramped. I am still able to pop the front when needed but have yet to do it unintentionally.

In terms of straight line steep climbs it's spot on. Not losing traction on the rear or lifting the front.

@Clink I'm 5'11" on a medium with 50mm stem - tried medium & large back to back on the demo loop from the Cotic unit. Both felt good going up and going along, but found I really struggled to weight the front when descending on the large.

I'd highly recommend trying both (and possibly also seeing if you can get them to try some stem lengths) before you commit.

@dc1988 What length fork were you running on your BFe? I had one of the 853/631 models with the straight small headtube (I think that's a MK2...?) and ran it a few ways round. It was a pretty decent all-rounder with a 140mm travel Revelation - had a lot of great days out on that bike. The later iteration with a 160mm travel Lyrik was kinda fun, but not great going up (thanks to slackening the seat tube) and jacked up the bottom bracket made for a few nervous moments (for both of us)!

I had a Mattoc and would switch between 160-130mm depending on what I was doing. It didn't climb very well either way but I felt it descended better with 160.

A lot of my problem probably comes from the fact I'm 6'5" and it meant my saddle was very high and well over the back wheel. Thank god bikes are getting bigger!

So finally picked the new bike up today. Just ordered some blue hope bar ends as I am a tart. Otherwise I have Fox Rhythm 34s 130mm, SLX brakes, SRAM NX Eagle gearing, Hunt trail wide 29" tubeless wheels, giant dropper, hope bottom bracket and headset. Can't wait to get out for a ride now.

Yes 6ft 2, this is an XL frame and feels about right to sit on though obviously not ridden yet.

Will sort those tyres too, been annoying me slightly since I got it.

Really not sure it needs a steeper ST. I’ve had mine since March and have never struggled with climbs or having the front wheel lift even on trips to Wales. Feels more efficient than my Bird Aeris with a steeper seat angle!

What are they like for popping off things/wheels in the air kind of stuff?

I'm thinking Llangegla blacks and BPW reds (as well as natural trails that encourage this kind of behaviour)

Here’s mine from a somewhat drier and warmer September.

Even with a 140mm fork and 2.8 chubbies, I still find it a very poppy bike. It’s as much fun piling through stuff as it is trying to avoid it.

I don’t find the SA an issue. It’s definitely slacker than my RipMo, but since I’m on the wrong size (M, cotic recommend a L) it’s all a bit moot. I just know it’s a blast to ride.

Mine’s been to Wales a few times, Fod, Yat, Quantocks, etc. Seems to get up and down stuff okay. Rider clearly the limiting factor!

5Ft11 with short legs. I had a M (MK1) FlareMax as well even tho Cy reckoned I should be just on the L. I like long droppers and could get a 200mm in my SolarisMax. Pic has a 170mm.

I think both would be fine, but I tend to prefer smaller frames. Getting back on my (L) Ripmo feels massive.

Never weighed mine... But when I'm enjoying a blast down Coire Lair in Torridon or off the Stalker's Path on Carn a Gheoidh above Feshie, weight is the last thing on my mind.
I'm more concerned with the bike being robust fun than actual numbers.

With its ‘winter chubbies’ on (2.8 MM/2.6 Forekaster) it’s just under 30lbs. With Rekon’s it’s about 28.5.

Same as highlandman, I don’t really care. It doesn’t ride heavy but it does ride brilliantly!

Not weighed it, but can tell you it's in the high 20s from the use of my highly calibrated hand scale.

Which is about what I'd expect for 29in wheels and reasonably burly bits.

Doesn't ride light and doesn't ride heavy, IYKWIM.

Edit- only had it 2 weeks, the mercury colour is lovely and it rides brilliantly, not had a slack hard tail before and feels like I won’t need to ride my FS except for maybe long pitched descents.

or off the Stalker’s Path on Carn a Gheoidh above Feshie,

Feshie's a favourite haunt of my Max, but I'm wondering if you've confused hills? Isn't Carn a Gheoidh over Glen Sheered/Cairnwell way? Do you mean Geall Charn?

I've demoed the large and the medium now, and am none the wiser. But thinking of opting for the large. Seemed a hoot in the Surrey Hills. on 140mm forks

Most of my riding is South Downs....and in summer some long days of ups and downs. And maybe the odd welsh marathon.

Any good as an all day bike with 140mm? or do you think it is worth the compromise and dropping to 130mm or 120mm?

Only ridden mine with 140mm fork, but it was fine for a 60km ride this summer.

Shorter fork might make it better for XC racing, just livening it up a bit, but the 140mm suits me as I use it with B-plus wheels as well (lowering the BB height).

I built up a large cosmic black Solaris Max two weeks ago (having bought the frame some months before when then new shipment arrived). So only two rides in at present. I'm 183cm. 6ft in old money.

It feels much bigger than my previous (donor) bike, a Yeti SB4.5. Even with a 35mm stem. I'm currently running an Fox F34 fork at 140mm and it feels fine. Although I'm looking to reduce this to 120mm, maybe compromise at 130mm.

I've not weighed it yet. It's not light, nor is it heavy. My 30mm internal rims are now supporting 2.5 29" rubber front and rear. The first ride felt harsh so I've dropped the psi to 22F/25R.

I'm still getting a feel for the bike. It's not quite as poppy as previous bikes but this might equate to the longer wheelbase. On the flip side to this it feels stable on the descents.

270 miles done on my Large Solaris Max now, I'm at 5'11". I built it with an adjustable Pike, so 140mm most of the time which feels super confident, but drops down to 110mm for steep climbs. I wanted it to be an all rounder and it's working out great so far!

It's my first 29er and first time on 2.4" tyres so it feels like a totally different animal to my old 26" Soul. Didn't take long to get used to though.

Ok- so it looks like I’ve picked up a second hand one in medium

Looking to move stuff over from The existing mk2. I’ve got a non boosted shimano xt crank.

Am I going to run into trouble running a 32 tooth chainring? Is it new cranks time?

from the cotic website:

Chainline: 50mm (regular cranks) for up to 32t chainring, 53mm Boost chainline for up to 36t chainring

should be fine.

Took mine out today not ridden it for while, still a joy to ride, is great on the technical bits, the downhill bits, find it a little sluggish on the climbs, so no rushing up hill more relaxed feeling on the way up, overall a very nice bike.

Question re stem and bar

I have a 50mm stem and 750@mm bar. Am I going to miss out on the whole longshot by not dropping to a 35mm stem and 780 bar?

It’s coming off an old bike and would save me some cash... but obviously I want to “do it properly”

Why does this thread have to rear it's head up, making me want one even more now!! Why did I make a new year's resolution not to buy any new bikes or frames for the whole of 2019? To make it worse they're out of stock of medium frames in all colours until the spring!!

@mccraque I spoke to them about that exact thing when I ordered my Rocket and the reply back was that they're designed round 35-50mm stems and bar width of 740mm+ so you should be right in the ballpark. Provided the bars aren't too far forward for you it'll be fine.

Yes finally 🙂
Have had mine 2 years now and has had more use than my full suss! Set up for winter use with 29" and 2.2 Forekastors. Mile crunching..
Summer use with 2.6 27+ Awesome round the FOD
Defiantly recommended. Toying with the idea of trading in my Whyte Full suss for a Flaremax to use the same wheels. Anyone else done the same?

My hubble purple Solaris frame arrived today.

Any suggestions for a decent 120mm-130mm fork for it for not a silly amount of money? I've got a 120mm Reba to  go on it for now but was thinking about getting something a bit nicer.

I just bought a DVO Diamond 27.5+/29 from Bike24. Spoke to DVO first. Really good people there. It's still about £550 but it's a heck of a lot of fork for that.

My XL 12.8kg with carbon wheels and chunky tyres (Minions).
I have found 30t is ok on a 50mm chainline.

Anyone else like the00 riding an XL?

I’ll be ordering a new frame to swap the 27.5+ parts from my carbon hardtail.

I’m 6’1” and undecided between the L or XL. The large is comparable to the current bike but I also have an XL BTR Pinner which fits well.

I’m concerned that the XL is quite tall and I don’t want a gate.
