I was out there today for the first time - lived in Edinburgh for ages but never been up there for some reason. There's clearly loads of bits and pieces there - looks like a good spot to improve skills, but maybe a bit small to put stuff together?

Anyhow, I noticed an amusing 'Attention Cyclists' sign showing a guy on an orange 5 landing a drop with a big red cross next to it. Adjacent was a photo of a middle-aged woman standing next to her hybrid with a tick, followed by some blurb on the land access laws and responsible riding. So clearly some tension here - is there a history of confrontation between walkers and MTBers tearing the place up?

There used to be loads of 'No Bikes' signs ... I guess the Outdoor Access Code got rid of them. I remember riding there about 10 years ago and getting hassle now and again but doesn't seem to happen any more

yeah, we used to go up there to do some of the wee jumps and drops that were dotted around (chocolate drop springs to mind, a classic!). Been up recently and there are some excellent rocky bits on the main paths, nice we challenging climbs and descents, nice route home from work although a little bit of a diversion...

We never had any confrontations although I did have a crash when I hit a log that had been dragged across a trail at hub height...

Been up recently and noticed a lot more building going on, not very subtle either so that could be part of the problem.

I have never seen that sign but there is a danger of conflict as it is a small areas - there is two bits I know of with a load of built jumps and stuff and thats fine 'cos it is subtle and off the main paths and doing no harm - if numpties have been building irresponsible again it will lead to trouble. I ave seen jumps built on a grassy area right at the intersection of a couple of paths.

be responsible and its fine. Don't scare the locals.

Yeah there are a few jumps out of the way. First set down by the road beside the hospital and the second in a walled garden behind Clerwood House. There is also plenty of little drops around near the tower. Not been up there for a long time either. Must make a mental note to return when I'm uncrippled.

I go up there reasonably regularly as it is on my doorstep.

Last year there was a group of young guys doing a lot of unapproved building and I think they even organised some racing where a crowd of them were sessioning the trail they'd built with some sort of timing setup. There were a few posts and info about their corstorphine hill 'invitationals' over on pinkbike.

Obviously the rangers and 'friends of corstorphine hill' didn't take too kindly to this (especially as they claimed the trail disturbed a badger set), hence the relatively recent signs.

Having said that I've never had any bother as a solo rider and it is a great place for just mucking about for an hour or so - plenty techy bits to work at. Can get pretty muddy depending where you go but the main paths have been gravelled in the last couple of years so it's possible to go for a spin regardless of how wet it's been.
