These rims are built up on Hope Pro II Evo's and were bought by me as new/ take offs and have been great tbh but...
Jeffsy not ridden at all last year for "reasons" so decided to redo the tubeless setup in the hope I can get out a bit this year. Really missing the biking.
After cleaning most of the latex out of the bead seat there are a fair few corrosion marks around both rims. Not deep at all but you can feel them with your finger nail. Pic is of the biggest one. Ammonia free sealant but these things happen I guess.
Am I looking at needing a new wheel build or am I likely to get through this Summer with them ok? Then I can look at a rebuild over Winter when I won't be on the bike much. Cost of wheel build is a little bit of an issue as is the likely wait I would think this time of year? I'm based down in north Kent. I want the wheels sorted asap.
Can't buy these rims anymore (Volar 2.5's) as I would have attempted a rim swap otherwise. I don't feel competent enough to do a complete different rim, spokes etc build though.
Anyway, this is where the patches of corrosion are.

I'm a wheels on the ground rider but I weigh near 16 stone loaded up so they need to be sturdy.
I'm tempted to just see if they hold air and the them (hopefully) this Summer.
Worst case, what's the sort of labour charge for building a wheels, I've no idea? The Hope hubs can obviously be reused.
Alloy rims though right - so just a bit of surface corrosion?
I’d just re-tape them with nice wide rim tape - the tubeless tyre seals again the tape not the rim so should still hold air. Just use 30mm tape or something like that.
I don’t think I’d even be contemplating changing that rim out.
Thanks for reply mate.👍
Yeah, alloy rims.
I'm more concerned about any structural issues to be honest, I reckon they'll hold air ok.
I'd just get some wire wool and rub the raised bits down. Once you've got the superficial corrosion off you can see if its gone deep or not bit like a tooth at the dentist. But apart from that even if you kept the old rim tape you'll likely just get away with using it again with it smoothed down IMHO. Good luck
They are the actual "pits" in the ally in the pictures mate, hard to get decent pic of but that's the silver alloy you can see where the anodising has been eaten away.
They are actually very shallow, just enough to be felt with a finger nail.
I just have visions of some catastrophe rim failure whilst riding... or something.lol
Wouldn't worry me, I'd remove the tape, give them a good clean and re-tape with wider tape that covers the entire rim bed
Remove the tape, clean them up, _coat of paint over the inner rim surface_, new, wider tape and go for it.
Cheers guys.
I'll get on and set them up for use again. Thanks!
I'd clean 'em, paint'em, tape 'em, ride 'em.
^^ Cheers for reply mate.
The corrosion is a bit worse on the rear wheel, around the valve hole mainly. Not deep but more of it.

Going to rub down all the exposed areas then use an automotive spray that goes on to bare alloy fine.
Then wider rim tape. Just glad to be able to save the wheelset for now but will look at having the hubs rebuilt onto new rims in the winter I think.
Huge thanks guys.👍
I don’t think I’d even be contemplating changing that rim out.
This. Very much superficial.
Cheers matey.
I'll be back on the bike soon. Can't wait!
