I've been thinking about getting a bit more serious about selling my Kona Jake the Snake, but when I went to start cleaning it up the other day, I noticed what appears to be rusty marks around the bottle-bosses. Pic here:
The frame is a 2007, so unless I'm (very) mistaken, supposedly completely aluminium. Could it just be the threaded inserts for the bottle-bosses, or the screwy-things themselves.
Any thoughts on this? Anything to be concerned about? Any tips on removing it?
picky no worky 😳
Now?
that's better 😀
They could be rivnuts, which will be steel into the alloy tube
Hard to see, but looks like it could be galvanic corrosion at the junction between rivnut and frame... 🙁
I've got what I'd guess are similar alloy blisters, also around the bottle bosses (among other places) on my Stumpie M2 frame. It's 1998, so I guess yes there must be some kind of alloy corrosion / acute oxidisation happening.
Hasn't broken yet 🙂
Okay, looks like some googling required. Hopefully it's not serious.
Cheers all.
It's bugger all, they'll be steel or at least a steel alloy threaded inserts. There may be some galvanic corrosion as you get that when dissimilar metals are present: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion
But, it's likely to be very localised. My advice - small wire brush, some wd40 or similar, clean it up and it may slow down the corrosion, and will definitely make it look better.
Wouldn't worry at all. I've had loads of aluminium bikes with worse corrosion then that and non have failed.
