Good news coming from Cornwall in recognition at least where it's been announced that the NHS will trial "prescribing" cycling for people with a selection of health conditions.
GPs and social prescribers, will be able to refer patients to groups that will help them be more active through cycling or walking.
Among "treatments" being offered will be
Access to bikes through cycle loans
Access to e-bikes through a loan initiative
Cycle confidence courses
Adaptive cycle sessions
Local bike banks
Cycle maintenance training
Walking groups
Now anything that promotes active lifestyle choices such as cycling is all good for me, but let's be honest, the single biggest factor to implementing cycling as a daily transport choice (I'm not talking sport or mountain biking here) is by building safe segregated infrastructure - if kids were safely separated from fast moving cars and given direct, completely safe routes that went where they needed to go like schools and town centres, then there would be an immediate benefit and modal shift. Yes there are some great cycle routes along Penzance sea front from St Michaels Mount to Mousehole, but you've got to be able to get there safely, and your school, college or chemist probably isn't down that way. Its encouraging reading the health care professionals and locals views on it but I can't help thinking it needs a bit more
Any holiday makers that know the route from Penzance to St Ives - would encourage your kid to cycle down there? Stick some serious segregated lanes in and you'll see a shift that will make a difference to the NHS.
I await the first reports in the Daily Fail of patients holding up traffic.
They’re trialling it in a few areas.
About time!
