So can anyone recommend someone for repairing a cooker, one oven has given up completely and the fan on the other stopped working some time ago . I'm under strict instructions that given something called Christmas is not far off I'm not to attempt to diagnose and repair this myself!

British gas do a fixed price repair on cookers I believe and have most parts next day

pull the fuse and do it yourself.
There are enough guides on you tube.
I have worked for British Gas you may as well just get a new cooker it will be cheaper

Probs the element (if elec). Cheap as and easy diy

Yes pretty sure it is the element, took out the mcb and rcd when it went. I'll look on line for a guide, it's not me whose averse to the DIY route it's a higher authority.
