I'm currently running an XT 3x10 set up. If I replace this with an SLX 2x10 chainset will it work with my existing components?
Currently using
SLX 10 speed shifters
Front Derailleur: Shimano SLX M660E6X 10-speed
Rear Derailleur: Shimano XT M780 Long Cage 10-speed
Cassette and chain: XT 10 speed
You can do it by simply removing the big ring, fitting shorter chainring bolts and screwing in the limit screw to stop the chain coming of and shorten the chain apropriately.
Downsides
- 2x front mechs are a different shape and hold the chain better.
- middle rings and 2x rings are subtly different also.
- middle rings are typically 32 or 34t, 2x rings are usually 36 or 38t (or bigger).
- dedicated 2x chainsets are offset a couple of mm so that the 'middle' of a triple would be between the chainrings of a double.
Upside
+ you can replace the outer ring with a bashring if you ride somewhere rocky.
+ far cheaper than buying dedicated bits.
