I already have a 30t oval aftermarket ring that I used on a XT M8000 crankset and kept as spare.
If I buy a Boost SLX double can I simply replace the 2 rings by the oval 30t or are the crank arms actually different? Thanks. Nick.
Crank arms are the same.
M7100 is different but available on the same site.
Boost double running as a single would be a bad chainline, a non boost double running as single gives a boost chainline.
Thanks everyone. So crank arms are not the same?
It's the usual way with responses - they just leave you more confused !?
First reply is correct - the RH crank is the same for double or single.
Second reply links to the correct .pdf but also offers some spurious advice about M7100 cranks which you're not asking about.
Third reply is confusing, as although correct in principle if you only removed the small chain ring to go single, in reality and as you ask that isn't the case, the single shimano chain rings and most aftermarket ones are made with an offset so the correct chainline is maintained.
If it helps, I bought a double SLX M7000 crankset with chain rings to run with a single ring as it was cheaper than buying the single cranks on their own ! Sold the 36T ring for £20 on ebay as well !!
Thanks Steel!! Well that's exactly what I have noticed, the double SLX 7000 boost is cheaper than the ring less single. So as soon as I have removed the 2 rings, I will have bare arms that will take my existing single 30t that used to be on my M8000 cranks and I can sell 2 spare rings. No brainer as I will end up with a Boost single for less than an identical Boost single.
I'm sceptical, please tell us your chainline when you've done it.
Sceptical why? If the arms are the same then the chainline will be the same by definition.
Do you think the arms are different whether you buy the crankset as a double or without ring?
Might be some confusion here. Your post could be read as you replacing a non-Boost crank with a Boost one on a non-Boost frame. I just assumed it was a Boost frame too.
Good point! Apologies. The new frame is boost.
I am simply using a Oneup ring that is spare and happened to be on a different bike/crankset.
