You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi all,
Really want to run my steel rigid 29er as a single speed - I obviously need the single cog, some spacers and a new chain - but I understand the front cogs for SRAM eagle are designed in way to interact with the chain (according to the marketing blurb) - will running a SS chain ruin/wear it?
THansk!

I assume rear hub is splined rather than Xd? I’d be more worried about how to get the rear SS than the chainring.
9/10/11/12 speed chains all have the same inner width, so your narrow wide eagle chainring can be used with any of the above.
I'd fit an AB SS narrow wide sprocket, with a 9 or 10 speed chain.

You'll also need a shimano free body for your hub.
Sorry it's an Eagle NX so Shimano compatible.
ta11pau1, that's quite a lot of money for a chain ring - is there anything wrong with this?

There are a few XD compatible singlespeed kits out there also.
Works chainrings are a fair bit cheaper but seem to last. If you don’t want an oval on one used to do a steel chainring which will probably outlast the bike.
I’d look at one of the wide based ss cogs if you can stretch to it, I found the thin ones didn’t do the freehub huge amounts of good. I think velosolo do them. That said, the kit you linked would be fine to decide if you like it.
Gussett XD 1ER (iirc) is what you need for an XD driver for singlespeeds - ison distribution distribute them - that on one kit won't work if you have an XD driver hub (which, unless you have an NX Eagle cassette, you will have)

Basicly it's thin, which means it'll chew its way into the freehub if it's alloy rather than steel. So it depends on the freehub.
Most quality SS sprockets are for 3/32 chains (or 1/8 but thats rare and overkill on a mountaionbike).
So get a 3/32 chain e.g. KMC Z610
And good sprockets like
on-One Groove Armada
Halo Fat Foot
Gusset
Surly
E.g. this kit https://www.bikemonger.co.uk/gusset-double-six-converter-kit-16t-223-p.asp (hard to see, but the sprocket is L shaped in profile making it much wider art the bottom)
The front chainring will be fine.
Just remembered sram do steel direct mount chainrings pretty cheap. Grab one of those after your current chainring wears out and along with a sturdy sprocket enjoy never having the change them again!
