52T Pass Quest ring on Shimano 105 FC5800 spider.
Flat where I live so never use the small chainring, figured I might convert to 1x narrow wide (for good chain retention), remove the small ring and the front mech saving: Shimano 52t 164g, 36t 34g, mech 109g, cables 30g vs Passquest 52t 134g = 203g.
Any good reasons not to do this besides the faff and the £43 cost (from ebay).
If you want to do a really neat job these brake levers from Planet X aren't a bad match for the 105 levers, means you don't end up with flappy lever syndrome on the left hand side, also probably saves a chunk of weight also!

Yes that'll work - I'm running two cross bike like that, both bought as 105 2x, both running as 1x and only ever been run as 1x, 3 seasons on one, 2 seasons on the other, all just works.
My Winter/commuter has been set up 1x9 with a 42t chainring and 11-34 Cassette the range is good enough for local hills and rolling flat, not too bad on the descents but it's a more relaxed bike anyway.
Gravel/CX bike has the same Cassette but with a 38t chainring.
You notice the steps more on the winter road bike TBH. So more sprockets/smaller steps vs required gearing range is the conundrum to consider.
It's worth doing a comparative spreadsheet or using that Gear calc website just to see what different options gain/lose for you.
I'm still undecided about doing something similar to my nicer road bike (currently 2x10)...

2 x 105 - and I thought 1 x 12 was a lot of gears! I’d like to see that rear cassette....
I run 1x11 on my roadie (44t and 10-42). Works well. I fit a 42 or 40t ring if I'm heading anywhere hillier. These are with Rotor oval rings.
Looks like chainline should be similar as with the big shimano ring only?
I put a narrow/wide 42T Hope on my C de Fer and went 1lsp 11-42 XT. Switched to flat carbon bars at the same time. Bike is really comfy now for an old fart like me.
Re jigged my Mason this way. 2 x 11 down to a 1 x 11
Using 40t and an 11/42t. Love it's basic simplicity 🙂
I have 1x10 on my hybrid- which does the job a road bike would do if I could get on with drop bars. Obviously a wee bit easier to do when you can easily fit mtb parts but I've never regretted it. Probably would if I was ever to decide to ride up an alp, but I won't, so that's fine.
