Hi, I'm looking to upgrade the cassette on my HT bizango 2016 reason being its a bit rusty in parts and not sure what's wrong with it as it seems to be slipping/jumps when I change gear to smaller cogs.

It's running 2x10 at the moment, thinking of making it 1x10 what stuff do I need for this conversion something not very expensive? I hardly use the big cog in the front anyway so might as well take it out.

Deore M6000 cassette will do the job. 11-42. 35 quid.

Firstly, check and free up and lube your existing drivetrain. It might work fine if you give it some tlc.

I'm a big fan of the Sunrace cassettes. Got them across 3 bikes. Watch this.

Basically, you should need a cassette, and chainring. You might later want to switch to a clutch mech if you've not got one.

Sounds like you may want or need to update some other drivetrain bits if they're a bit corroded.

I would try cleaning and lubing it all first and also replacing the gear cables before replacing the cassette. It sounds to me like the gear cable may be sticking and preventing it shifting cleanly to smaller cogs. If the cassette is badly worn, then the chain and chainrings probably will be too, so you will need to replace all of them at the same time.

If you're only using the small ring on a double ring setup, the chainline will probably be horrible in the small cogs so that will cause premature wear and possibly poor shifting. If you want to convert to a single ring setup, you'll need to make sure that your chainline is ok. Personally, I would stick with the double setup and save the small ring just for steep climbs, with the big ring used most of the time (how they're designed to be used).

@kayak23
Thanks, will take a look at them. Just not sure how many Teeth front&reaar I should get for the conversion. Bizango has a clutch mech already so that's good saves me a little bit.

My girlfriends’s Voodoo Maji came with 11-42 on the back and 34 tooth on the front with 27.5 wheels.

That might be a good starting point

Actually, since the Bizango has 29 inch wheels, 32 tooth front chainring might be a better bet.

@junglistjut

Thanks, so it'd be 11-42t Rear and 32t Front? I can't find Deore M6000 cassette on CRC 😆

You could try the Sunrace ms3 11-42 for an alternative to the Deore - they’re usually pretty cheap.

You may find your rear mech might not reach the 42 cog if it’s a Shimano 10 speed mech (other than the relevant Deore 10 speed clutch mech which should reach that). If you find that you may need a goat link to space it out enough to work (or one of the cheap copy mech hanger extenders).

Defo go 32t or maybe even 30t on the front with a 29er.

You’ll need to check the bcd of your crank to buy the correct fitnof chainring - and it’ll need to be narrow wide (nw) to retain the chain well.

Search for HG 500 cassette.

32 tooth will be fine, the newer 1x11 Bizango uses a 32 tooth front and 42 rear. I’ve ridden one of those a few times and the gearing is fine.

Linky

I was given an llspd 11-46 to try by my mate. The 11-50 above sounds even better for some of the long climbs around here.
