Converting 148 hubs to 142 with end caps

I have an option to buy a cheap street frame, and have loads of spares to build it up. However, the frame is 142*12mm in the rear and my spare wheels are built up as 148*12mm boost with MS freehub.

I have spare MS 12 speed cassettes and chains (supply chain issues prepping stock!)

There are a myriad of end caps and freehubs available for sale for the hubs separately

Here are pics of my hubs and the spares:

Can I.....

1) change the end caps and then run the boost wheels with the existing MS 12spd 10-50t cassettes and chains i have, but and buy a goat link and Shimano (12spd) M6100 shifter/mech? (£46)

Or do I.......

2) change the end caps, and the freehub to HG version, buy a new HG 11spd cassette, chain, goat link and Shimano (11spd) M5100 shifter/mech? (£102)

You can’t convert down to 142mm.

I’d just stretch the rear end to fit if it’s steel. Won’t take much.

even if youdid fit shorter end caps, your casette would be 3mm outboard.maybe even clash with the frame, single speed could sort that. youd still have a disc too far out hte other side too youd need to deal with

Frame is an alu DJ/Street with slide able dropout adaptors for 26/27.5" and is reportedly stiff. I won't be yanking it apart.

So, and this is whey I'm wondering if this is possible, the weird thing is that the hub comes in 142*12 width with MS freehub and says 12spd

It says 28h and my hubs are 32h.

Could it be, that the change is on the disc side? There's a huge cap and gap that side.

148 hubs differ from 142 in the hub shell. You can bodge a 142 to 148 with a longer NDS endcap and a re-dish, as it moves the Rotor inboard which can be spaced back out to compensate. Going the other way leaves you with nowhere to go in terms of correcting the rotor position.

The 2 hubs pictured will have different hub shell widths.

What’s the frame?

Kinesis TDF420. I can get it with headset, seat clamp and rear axle for about £180.

Okay. Been talking to the shop that sold me the wheels. That has the aftermarket kits, and that sale for the 142*12 MS 28h rear hub. The guy says I can't reuse my wheel (whilst avoiding engaging with me on the freaky hub they apparently sell)

I have to buy a new wheel it seems. And doubt I'm going to be able to use my stored cassettes.

Just re-read your initial post - without glasses on I mis-read “street” as “steel” I presume! Sorry. Yes - not budging that back end!

I’d just get a new hub.

Buy a cheap non boost hub and get the wheel rebuilt?

It'll depend on the hub, some hubs do exactly as you suggest adding wider end caps to make the same hub body boost, some the boostyness is achieved with a wider hub body.

Googling your hubs it looks like they're probably the latter but the details I can find are sparse and on Ali express.

(took way too long to hit post and see you've had the conversation with the shop)

Yeah, even the shop says no, although that strange listing picture I showed above suggesting 142*12 with MS freehub.

Looking around, there is another ARC hub that does 28h (MT046?) . Maybe they got the listing confused with that

@earl_brutus the market where I am is odd. Different supply chains. Frequently there are no rebuild able sparea for brands sold here. Like that hub. £56 gets me a whole new budget rear hub, with spokes and a Sun Ringle MTX33 rim built onto it.
