Work is doing the ride to work scheme this year, which can include helmets and lights and things for commuting. A number of years back I had an helmet on the scheme and was thinking of doing the same this time round.
Over Christmas I was chatting with a mate about going to revolution, but it requires a full face helmet. Well I'm not about to splash out on one only to use it once or twice a year. Which brings to the question about convertible helmets.
Are they any good? and which one should I get?
Any advise is much appreciated.
My stock answer for this is "one that fits".
I've got the Giro Switchblade as the Bell Super just didn't fit my head shape.
Can't say how effective it is as I've not crashed in it, but I can get the visor on and off without removing the helmet and I find it comfortable enough.
Si
For pure uplift and price I'd do a cheap DH FF even if it's just a few times a year.
Convertible is good if you want FF on some harder trails but they don't come in that cheap!! Fit is important so try some on, got a giro switchblade which works well for me
I've got a Switchblade. I bought it when I was doing mostly easy trail centre stuff and I assumed I'd be taking the chin guard off for most of it. After a couple of rides I stopped bothering and only ever use it as a full face.
If I was buying again I'd be looking at the Fox Proframe.
+1 for two helmets. Full face helmets can be picked up quite cheaply, I reckon you could get both a normal lid and full face for less than the cost of a convertible. I'd also say (based on comparing my own bell super and 661 ff) that a proper ff will offer more protection.
Hmm, I think I'll look at what the T&Cs are. Getting two helmets seams a bit frivolous to me, but it may be the way to go.
Thanks for the advice..
I saw merlin were doing the bell super dh helmet for £150 the other day and was tempted. Probably not available on the cycle to work scheme which is no help.i tried one on and it was very nice.
