I recently got a thru axle frame and want to use my existing kinesis maxlight wheels.
The axle with came with some adapters to make it 142 width. Problem is when I screw them on to the axle and into the cassette hub, there isn't enough space to screw the cassette lockring on (which is Shimano 10speed XT). The base of the 142 converter takes up pretty much the whole area in the hub where the threads are.
Hope this is clear enough but could post pictures if not.
Is something not compatible or am I doing something wrong?
Cheers
Kind of normal with a few hubs, can you refit the adapter after the cassette? Or different tool
The adaptor is normally part of the hub not the axle. Do you know if the hubs are convertible?
Centrelock disk tool will probably do it.
Edit I think I might be misunderstanding.
Do you mean the tool won't fit of the the locking won't
So is not about the lockring needing to have a longer threaded section to get into the freehub? .... It's about not physically having room to screw the lockring in?
Have I got that right?
A pic would be handy bud. 🙂
Yes that's right poopscoop, not enough room to screw in the lockring.
When I say adapters, think I mean end caps.
I did try putting the end cap over the lockring but then the width is over 142.
Maybe I need an end cap that doesn't have a wider base??
Sounds a bit like your trying to use the wrong end caps. Are your hubs definitely convertible and have you bought the specific convertors for your hubs?
Do you need one of these??

Which maxlights? If it's mtb then you're compatible. Have you changed the axle as well as the end caps? The axle is different for qr and bolt thru, and you also have 2 different sets of adapters for thru axle, 135 and 142. I can break my wheels down tomorrow if your still stuck and take a couple of pics. I've got a 10speed xt on the 142 hub spacing.
Thanks everyone.
Think i must be missing an end cap. I have three for the bolt thru.
One says 142 on, with a wider base, so guessing that goes on none drive side. One is the same but slightly shorter so assume for 135, not needed. The 3rd is more like a bolt, no wide base bit, so let's me get the cassette lockring on.
However when fully threaded on, the whole thing is short of 142. So presume i need another, longer version of the 3rd piece?
Is the third the mate for the 135 non-drive that you have?
This is a link to the Crosslight set, not mine, which are maxlight, but presumably similar.

The 4th pic shows endcaps... from L to R... 135, QR, 142 (??).
Should the top right end cap go into the cassette hub drive side? I think the one I have might be too short.
The crosslight are different looking at that pic.
My 135 endcaps measure 19mm for the flanged end cap and 14mm for the straight on the 135 adapters. Measure yours - I think your trying to use the 135's.
The 142 are longer obviously. I haven't measured those as they're on the wheel but if yours are the 135 then there is your issue.
Email paddy at upgrade they are really helpful with this kind of stuff, I'd buy kinesis gear purely on upgrades service. They sent me a set out - obviously the wheels are discontinued now so they might not have any but it's worth a go.
If you want me to I'll strip the wheel and measure the 142 end caps.
Thanks Nick, appreciate that. Yes the straight adapter is 14mm so must be 135. I don't have a longer one so I've contacted upgradebikes, as suggested.
hope they have a spare...
I emailed them yesterday to see if they had any 142 adaptors as my second hand wheels did not have them.
I was given a link to spares but nothing there so give them a call to check.
