I have a 2016 Carbon Stumpjumper that I am thinking of converting from 2x10 to 1x10. Part of the reason for this is that the front mech broke and I am having extreme difficulty in getting a new one (long story, will post here if anyone wants to know). I have bought a second hand mech on e-bay, but quite like the idea of reducing weight and complexity on the bike.
Anyone else out there who has done this?
Current set up: is 22t and 36t chainrings with a 11t-36t cassette.
Thinking of going to: a 30t chainring with a 11t-42t cassette or if possible a 11t-46t.
Add a Goatlink to the rear derailleur or change it for a Shimano XT 11sp RD, which apparently works really well on a 10sp set up, but may also need a Goatlink.
Any advice very welcome, Cheers.
XT 11spd mech does work fine with a 10spd shifter - i've got this set-up, on an 11-42 Sunrace cassette. No Goatlink. Can check model numbers later if you need to know - i'm sure it's a medium cage (GS) type.
32T narrow-wide at the front, but on a 26" wheel bike. I do run out of gears on really fast smooth stuff, or the road home, but the easiest end of the cassette is fine for me.
Hi,
I removed the bracket on mine and had a washer machined to fit in its space. You can see it on the right. You can probably buy one.
You can see in this picture it doesn't have the bracket. I then used a chain guide using the bb tabs and a single nw ring.

Is it not a standard derailleur? There are variations to fit different frames, but Shimano or SRAM must make something that will fit, surely.

Weight savings will be pretty minimal. Personally, I think the range of a 2x setup is worth the minor increase in complexity. That's a personal thing. If you think a 30x11 top gear is high enough for what you do, a 1x10 setup makes sense. I tried it and didn't like it. Other people have different experiences.
@thols2 - I spoke to the chaps at Specsh UK and apparently the front mech was specially (no pun intended) made by SRAM to mount on the “Taco Blade”, but only for Specsh bikes and is not an official SRAM part. The chaps at Specsh are trying to find one, but I don't hold out much hope. In 2017 they went to 1x on their bikes so SRAM stopped making that particular front mech for them.
Weight savings will be pretty minimal.
Front shifter, front mech, the metal bracket, inner and outer cables and a chain ring will be a pretty good weight saving. Plus frees up space for a dropper Post lever.
Fit a 32t front nw chain ring and a 42-11 rear cassette (or bigger) and your off. You just need a washer to replace where the metal bracket was.
If you are going to an 11 speed anyway my standard 11 speed XT mech works on an 11-50 Sunrace cassette with no extra link thing. To be honest if you're getting a new mech, chainring and cassette, why not get a new shifter and go 11/12 speed? New Deore with 11-51 on a standard freehub and you can go bigger at the front with the extended range.
@damascus - cheers, that was my thinking as well. Although a swift diet after all the lock down eating would probably save a lot more! 🙂
You won't need a goatlink with a 42t cassette.
If you are lucky and got the spares box that Specialized supply with the bike the washer should be in the box.
Ran ours with 1 X 11 and a 30T front ring. Eldest daughter has the Evo which has 12 speed on it. Sold the others on last year, one as a frame and two as full builds.
This is a pretty straightforward conversion actually.
11speed mech on 10s setup works fine (Shimano for sure)
Sun race cassette, to 46t
Front chainring as middle ring on cranks...
Shouldn’t need a goat link unless your frame is somehow different.
I’ve done this with both stumpy and enduros from that year.
All good.
Front shifter, front mech, the metal bracket, inner and outer cables and a chain ring will be a pretty good weight saving.
Cassette will be heavier.
Cassette will be heavier.
Depends what cassette you buy! My hope cassette 44t is lighter than the xt cassette I removed

The OP has a 10 speed setup with 11-36 cassette. He wants to go to an 11-46 cassette, which I'm assuming means a Sunrace cassette. If he uses a Sunrace cassette, it will be quite a bit heavier than an XT 11-36. I wasn't aware that Hope did a 10 speed 11-46 cassette.
Assuming it's the stock cassette that came with the bike he might actually save weight on the cassette. (if described weights are accurate)

He wants to use an 11-46 cassette. That's heavier. If he wanted to save weight as a first priority, an XT 11-36 would be quite a bit lighter.
Sunrace 11-46 weighs 436 g.
https://www.sunrace.com/en/products/detail/csmx3
Shimano XT 11-36 weighs 343 g.
So, an 11-46 Sunrace cassette is heavier than either a SRAM or Shimano cassette for a similar price.
If you want to go silly expensive, a SRAM XX 11-36 is 208 g, so that's over 200 g lighter than an 11-46.
Thanks for all the help and advice guys. For me weight isn't a massive issue, as I said earlier in the thread shedding weight off of my body would be a far better and far cheaper exercise 🙂 However it is a nice by product of simplifying and cleaning up the bike's looks a little. I now have a second hand front mech installed, but think I will still go to a 1x10 set up, after all I can always go back to 2x10 if I don't like it. Cheers
