My wife kindly treated me to one of those bargain GoPro Session 5 cameras at Argos, which I'm just beginning to explore.
GoPro provide apps to alter settings and control the camera from Android and Apple OSes, but I don't have a smartphone. There is a Windows Mobile app available for Windows phones, but this is ARM architecture only and won't install on my desktop.
GoPro's desktop application, GoPro Quik seems dire (it runs constantly at around 65% cpu load and barely works at all) and very basic. Are these any other apps out there I could try?
Watching with interst as I sold my last GoPro due to the piss boiling phone and windoes software.
XoylnCoub resist a bargain though.
Edie I see this forum still sucks forbs spelling on Android, top work website gutes.
It looks like I might have to dust off my old Android tablet to access all the Session 5 settings; it seems odd though that GoPro don't offer camera setup via their desktop app.
Old tablet, ha the session 5 needs a 5 or above operating system. Seems i'm in the same situation, phone's too old, as is tablet, won't work with windows grr.
It's not just us - https://community.gopro.com/t5/Cameras/Control-from-PC/td-p/1741
Seems very lazy from GoPro's perspective.
As the Session 5 is now discontinued I can't see it changing but I'd imagine that this lack of functionality affects the whole range.
You should be able to connect to the camera's wifi, then access a bunch of URLs using a regular web browser to set the different options (just open up the page and click on the links corresponding to the options you want to set).
The basic commands (used by Hero4 and newer) are at https://github.com/KonradIT/goprowifihack/blob/master/HERO4/WifiCommands.md , the rabbit hole is this way: https://github.com/KonradIT/goprowifihack
You can change all the settings directly on the camera using a combination of presses of the shutter button and menu button.
It doesn't take long to do and once you have the majority of setting sorted you will rarely change them. The only routine changes I make on my GoPros are resolution and frame rate.
Having a smart phone to set up shots and check the field of view is a major benefit though.
If you want to play with the pro tune (white balance. etc.) you'll need a smartphone with android or iOS. Otherwise as above you can edit the major stuff on the camera via button presses.
The Windows desktop applications are horrific and the Smart deivce ones aren't much better. I tend to extract the video using the Apps/programs then do my editing on iMovie or whatever.

That sounds like the way to go, thanks. I'm not sure quite how to go about this; it appears that the Session presents a small wifi network of its own which I need to connect to.
My PC isn't wifi enabled, so I may need to purchase a dongle; however our BT hub has wifi on (and sees an unknown device which I assume to be the session in pairing mode); can I connect a second network to the hub or will I need to go down the dongle route?
You would need to switch the BT hub to repeater mode, in order to act as a client for the GoPro and "extend" its network, but doing so you will lose your internet access...
The old Android tablet should work to prove the concept, you can later decide whether the wifi dongle is worth it or not.
