Morning all
so I’ve decided to try some continental contact speed on my hybrid. I’ve had continental on previous bikes and always found them quite good.
The current tyres are 700x42c which are available in the conti. Is it better to stick to same size or maybe go down a size to 700x37. Not sure what benefits I’d gain ? Any help would be much appreciated
thanks
Tom
Fantastic tyres! The narrower ones might be a tiny bit quicker, but I'd plump for whatever will suit the bike better. Fill the mudguards properly or other way if you want a bit more clearance around the stays. That a choice for you really.
37s to 42s will make little difference to comfort or speed. Buy whichever is cheaper.
EDIT - the 37s may be lighter than your current tyres so will feel quicker to accelerate, but you’ll likely get used to it very quickly.
How would I know if 37 would fit my rims. I can’t find any info what the min they can take is online.
They'll fit if it's a 700c wheel/tyre. (Or 650/650). The rim width on a typical hybrid will be fairly middle ground so anything from approx 25 to 50mm width will also be fine. I've got some 2.3 inch tyres (55mm ish) on 17mm rims on my vintage MTB, they are a bit wide TBH, but still go on.
What won't work is mistakenly buying so bargain tyres and finding they were cheap because it's for a 20 inch rim. ? Ask me how I know.
Yeah on the manufacturers website it says the max is 50mm. Just doesn’t say the min. I’ll have a think and choose one of the sizes.
Weight difference is 95g between the 37 and 42
Conti aren't massive for their stated size, I'd stay 42.
It’s 5mm I’m sure it can’t make that much of a a noticeable difference. ?♂️
Minimum tyre width for a rim for road tyres is pretty much the outer rim width. So unless your rims are 35mm+ outer width, it’ll be fine. I run 30mm outer width rims with 32mm tyres.
Hi
yeah I’ll double check that but I can’t see what 5 mm width is going to make plus 95g weight difference between the two.
Just checked mine are 31 outta
I reckon you're over thinking it now. Just buy the cheaper ones, or the lighter ones, or the reflective ones or any combination that you like. They're so similar neither will be the wrong choice.
Yeah I think you’re right ?♂️. I’ll get some ordered and roll with them ?
Not sure what I put questions marks. ??
Knackered emojis since the upgrade. Enjoy the new boots. ? (should be a thumbs up)
I had 37s and they came up a tad small.
I would go 42 if your frame can take it, run them at a pressure that is comfortable....
