I've been using the Conti Trail Kings for 4 years now (7-8 tires) and some of them came with some amount of wobble. Today I replaced both tires with a new pair and the front one has the biggest wobble yet. When I rotate the wheel fast, with the bike upside down, the entire bike moves because of the wobble. The tire is the most expensive model (BlackChili ProTection APEX) available. I would have returned the tire if I didn't bought it from abroad.
Are you guys also experiencing this with Conti tires ? I guess it would be somewhat acceptable if this would happen on the 20 euro OEM series, but I wouldn't expect this from the top tier "Handmade in Germany" series.
Yes, the tire sits properly and evenly on the rim (soapy water and 50 psi to make that happen). I also removed it off the rim and put in back again once again just to make sure.
I stopped buying Continental after I had two properly wobbly tyres, and there was a thread on here about others having the same problem.
I have had this with Conti, and Maxxis tyres soon end up like this for me too.
I haven't yet seen it from Schwalbe.
I've seen beads snapped with over enthusiastic installation of tires with "non-ideal" methods. I've also managed to snap a bead in a crash/heavy sideways landing.
I've not had any from new wobbles and I've used my fair share of contis.
I had this with a Bontrager tyre I purchased direct from Trek, I informed them of the issue & they immediately dispatched a replacement which was fine.
I've buckled 2 contis, one in a crash when I pringled the front wheel: I built the wheel back to with a new rim, put the tyre back on, massive wobble - What the hell? it was bang-on true!
Ah, it's the tyre.
Second was a hard turn in a compression. First ride on a new frame, new wheels. No crash. Felt the tyre rubbing a stay, thought I'd bent the frame or buckled the wheel or both. What the hell!?
Ah, it's the tyre.
Not buying Conti any more. Never had it with any other tyre in 35 years.
Had this with a couple of Conti Trail Kings a few years ago. It was our go to tyre, as a result it hasn’t been for some time.
Thanks guys. Good to know I'm not the only one. I'll give Conti one more chance. With the next wobbly tire I'll switch brands.
Might as well switch now. I had several wobbly ones 5 years ago and ditched them.
Not buying Conti any more.
Ha! Forgot when I wrote that that I'd just ordered Continental tyres for the car!
Doesn't sound the same when you say the whole name, does it? 😀 Altogether more refined. Fingers crossed the car tyres have more robust quality control!
Had with some Maxis took them back to shop I'd bought on line from as a bit of a drive and a mechanic pulled a box full down and an empty box and said sort thru them until you find an ok pair and put the wobbly ones in the other box please...
Well this explains the issues I had with my last trail king! Tried reseating the tyre several times and ended up just living with it.
