You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Last few days I've popped some 2.1 speedkings on my 5 and the front end keeps washing out. Never had this problem when I ran highrollers.
Anyone else had this problem or have I just become super fast?
I don't use Contis at all any more because they do that. Grip like crap to a blanket 99 times out of 100 and then for no reason and with no warning BANG you're on your arse.
Big solid square side knobs vs small bendy triangular side knobs. And the compound's quite hard too. Not a good front tyre for going round corners fast - strange choice for a Five!
Pros - Properly light and fast.
Cons - Deadly and puncture 5 times every ride.
Get the HR back on.
Speedkings are a much less grippy tyre than Highrollers, by design... But also much, much faster. What Highrollers was it you had, 2.35s? maxxpro or ST?
Skinny, racy xc tyres on a Five, mmmmmm. You have fitted racing slicks to your tractor

Some might but the Speed King is quite forgiving on the back, the X-King is amazingly progressive on the back and gives loads of feedback (including a whole host of interesting noises) when you're pushing it hard, and the Rubber Queen is a great front tyre.
Didn't like the Speed Kings as they just didn't grip enough and wore out very quickly. If you can run tubeless then you should as they puncture very easily.
I need a new set of boots and these came up cheap so had a go! Like the racing slicks on my tractor comment 😆
They remind me of Mich Wildgrippers... or Wildslippers as they where known!
The rear seems fine so i might stick a HR back on the front?
Any other suggestions? Used Ralphs before... wanting 2.1's as ive had XC hardtails for years and this is my first full sus. Used to running 1.95's fast rollers
I can see the problem. The logos and values arent lined up. This will unbalance your rotational torque and when it reaches critcal vasculinity will create unsusquantiated frictional variation or "washout" as you call it.
saddle and grips don't match - there is your problem
edit - why are you surprised that XC race tyres aren't as grippy as downhill/trail tyres?
Quelle surprise 😕

Not sure he is.
I think he just wanted to show us the bike.
You sure its not the flex on that maverick fork thats firing you off the bike,
Had a set of 2.1 speed kings on my hardtail for about 2 months ,I didn't like them for the same reasons as the OP. They are quick tyres though , I've swapped them for Maxxis ardents that I find much better

If you want to stick skinny, fast tyres on it, why did you get a Five? It's a wide, soft tyre sort of a bike, and brilliant at the job it's designed for but skinny tyres won't make it more like your xc hardtail, it'll just make it less good at the job it does well, it'll still be fairly bad at the job you seem to want it to do.
IMO of course 😉
